Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Forcing "Run as Administrator" in Win7

Is it possible to force an application to be run as administrator when first loaded and run?

This is a bit difficult to test on my own PC's, but after creating an Install Package with the Runtime and Application files, the chap testing it for me tried to install and got the "Program may not have installed Correctly" error which I am presuming is because he didn't run it as Administrator the first time.

Clicking the Icon brought up another error and I believe that is because it needs to be run first time as Administrator.

Given that Win7 is the flavour of the month and geared for non techies, I'd like to simplify that part of the installation.

    Any ideas?

Ted, I hope not. I don't want any software to be able to silently grab administrator privileges.

Chicken! Where's your sense of adventure!

Thanks Tom, it was a long shot so I'll put a "Read Me" in the installation instructions.
While I've got you, where/how should I put a RT Licence Key straight into the Registry or even as a file. Mike suggested it but I cannot find the instructions in V9.

Yep, got that one earlier John.
It looks like I can't get around the Win7 restrictions for installation.
Bit of a pain for new users who are afraid of computers anyway.

            Ted,
I found my v8 and v10 Runtime Documentation but no v9. The following is directly from the v10 Runtime Documentation which covers what you want to do. If you wanted to use the dialog box that comes up there is also a means in which to customize it in the instructions.

            Prompting for License Number
            Customizing the Dialog
When a user starts the Runtime for the first time, a dialog box is displayed to prompt for the Runtime license number. (If the license number is found in the 'license.key' file in the Alpha Five Runtime Executable folder, the prompt is not displayed). The user enters the number which is then stored in the registry in the following key location:
            HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Alpha Software\Alpha Five 10.0 Runtime\USER
When the user starts the Runtime subsequently, the prompt for the license number is not displayed.
I wasn't going to post the actual reg key but have seen it on the board several times so I guess it is no biggie to do so once again.....anyone who wanted to find it would be able to download the Runtime instructions anyway and find out.
            Mike

              Thanks Mike, much appreciated.
Stan sent me the Registry check code and I got it working fine.
Next problem is stopping the little tinkers running off with my software!

there is a lot wriiten on that one.

tying the app to the username/computer name/etc is not enough. Has to be a registration key and must be tied to something on the computer?+date?+ + + + ??? My opinion.

Thanks Dave, I have been thinking about a reg key tied to a startup script.
Loads it first time then removes the script and key from the startup.
When run, if key not exist, no work.

I'll do some more research and try and form an opinion.

If anyone finds out where the key is by using a tracking program, they can just copy the key to another computer, copy the files (which no longer have the script) and away they go!

If you can find any way that gets around using either the computer name or hard drive serial number (both have pros and cons), let me know. I'll incorporate it into my AIMS Reg routines and give you a free copy.

I'll let you have a free copy of my Project Tracker to see if you can bust it.
