Summarize expanded to XBasic

Hi there,

I would like to extract a total from a summarize operation which I have converted to XBasic.

The code works fine. How do I extract the Summarized total of field Txoutsamtf at the XBasic level ?

Dave, the summarize op creates a new table. Your script can open that table and fetch the desired record, right? Once fetched you can read the total value.

this seems long way 'round your elbow to get to your thumb. why not use tablesum()? That would seem a better approach if your filter is designed to return a single record.

Hi Tom,

Well, I'll be doggone.

You don't want to see what i went thru to calculate 6 x ageing balances and outstanding balance on my Accounts Receivable ! I just showed you a small part to give you the idea.

i really have to get closer to these functions that can save days with a single line of code.

When I was learning Clipper many years ago, we memorized all the functions(about 150) because that was really the language. Then we made functions of our own.

With Alpha, it would be impossible to memorize them all. The functions are not always named logically except mayb by the original person who made them.

Point: It takes searching help and asking questions sometimes.

While I agree that it is impossible to memorize all the functions I do think it prudent to at least try understand what types of functions are available and what some of them do.

Wiki Functions and Methods listed by type Of the 90 odd groupings listed on this link, one could peruse a group at a time to become passingly familiar with what they accomplish but not be overwhelmed.

Time spent just scanning the home page for each group and noting the Function (or Method) | Description would pay off in the long run. Any that sound useful could be studied further. (Home page for Character Search Functions, for example.)

What Stan suggests is exactly what I did when first learning xbasic....and now when I need to code something I usually assume that there is already a function or combination of functions that will do what I want and then find them, as Stan indicated, by checking out the group of functions that most closely fits what I need to do.

Thanks for input Guys.

Have actually started doing just that over the past few days - scanning a section on Browse hoping that there is a method that matches my requirement. It's when one actually applies a function that one remembers it rather than seeing it and hoping to remember that it's available.
