Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Currently i am having problems with making a new record. The invoice layout is fine all of codes
are working fine, but my invoice browse and my customer data will not clear when i hit new
invoice it all stays in the same spot. I don't know if it is because its all in the tabs or not. I've
taken the invoice browse out of the tab and it still dose not clear?

Not enough information. We'll need to see a sample of your database.

We have no idea what that does.

          Re: Invoice Problems

          Simon,

I recommend you start over. Your set linkages are inexact. The primary key field in your primary table of the invoice_header table is missing from your form layout. The customer field (needed to link the invoice_header table to customers) in the primary table is missing from your layout.

          1) name your tables, fields, sets, and forms with names that begin with an alpha character (a..z or A..Z); do not use blank spaces (use underscores if you wish); do not use punctuation symbols like dashes or apostrophes. Only alphanumerics or underscores. But begin the names with alphas.

          2) Build a simple two table set, linking your invoice_header and Invoice_items tables together. Use a single link field. Verify that the field data type and width is the same in both tables. In the sample you've posted they are not.

          3) Create a form based on the new set. Include the invoice_number field from the invoice_header table in your layout.

Verify that the new form is working correctly. Come back here if you have questions or problems.

Simon, a set based form will automatically supply link field values in the related child tables, provided you supply them in the primary table. Here your form is misbehaving because the link field values are either missing or broken.

Just to add to Tom's most excellent answer, have a look at Alphasports in the Samples folder.

                Hi Simon,

If you are working with dummy data, empty the tables and start again. Did you look at Alphasports? There is so much to learn from there!!!

Simon, why not zip your database and attach it to a post here so we can help you? Include instructions for us to follow to find the trouble spot. -- tom

Not sure where you are going with this from the design so far.
There do not appear to be any Browses as such other than the embedded one. Could you explain what you mean by a Fresh Browse for each new record?
As Keth says, open Alpha Sports, go to the Control Panel, Right click on the Invoicing Set, Edit and look at the construction - ESPECIALLY THE LINKING INFORMATION.

                      Re: Invoice Problems

The embedded browse just adds a new product line every time i hit the new record button instead i want everything on the page to become a new record like the one on alpha sports. What i don't understand is even though i click new record all of the products in the browse stay there and don't clear.

                        Re: Invoice Problems

If you have a field on your form that displays values from the parent table and you have that field activated (cursor in the field), using the New Record toolbar button will begin a new record in the parent table.

If you have a child field activated (cursor in the field in the browse), using the New Record toolbar button will begin a new record in the child table.

You could put a button on the form, use Action Scripting, Records category. Enter New Record. In the genie that appears choose the appropriate "level".
