Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Problems with using a form in a set

    Hi,

I have designed a form for a set containing 3 tables they are joined by a unique id. The primary table is for reference only by the person using the form who wants to phone customers and add the details of their conversation to the 3rd table in the set which has a memo field and address fields. The second table is for reference also, this appears on the form as a browse table so the person can see who we have dealt with in the past. When I try to enter data in the 3rd table it starts the numbering of the unique field at 1 and won't let me edit it - I thought that the data being combined in a set would mean that the 3rd table record would automatically assume the unique id of the primary table. Is it not possible to enter data in this way?

We use sets a lot in our booking system and have no problems at all with entering data, I can't figure out how to get around this problem.

    Regards

    Judith

Is this field set as autoincrement?
    There can be only one.

Judith, pls attach a zipped copy of your database, with instructions for us to follow to find the misbehaving form.

          Judith,
I have to say that your set structure and table composition as you have described it makes no sense to me. I understand the parent table which has the customer for calling, and I understand documenting details of calls in another child table (table3) in a memo field, but I cannot understand why table3 which is used for documenting the details of the calls (I am assuming many because you are documenting many "people you have dealt with") would be the table with the company address. Each documentation of a call details also requires entering the companies address again? And is the details of the call (table3) linked to the person that "you have dealt with" (table2) or to the customer(parent table). That would be two different set structures entirely.

I agree with Tom, need to see your table and set composition.

Sort of agree with Mike here Judith, and definitely agree with Tom.
My really old CRM app for Recruitment used a Unique ID for the Customer, 1:M link to the Customer Staff, 1:M link to the Conversations with Staff - by date, and 1:M link to the Contractor Tables. It also has reminders and a contact diary but you may not need that sort of facility.

            So,

            Find Customer to call
Browse Customer Staff and last conversations
            Call and update notes
E-mail details of suitable candidates using the Customer Staff Demographics record.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

              Hi,

I think I have solved the problem by making table 3 (which requires the data entry) the parent table and joining it to the customer table were there is a match on unique_id. The address only needs entering again is if they have moved address.
