Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Transfering files from XP OS to Windows 7, using Alpha Five v9

How do I move my files from one computer to another?

    Dummy here!

With the control panel visible, Tools menu, Zip Database wiil create a compressed file containing the database.

How you transfer that file to the new computer is up to you. Flash drive available? Email the zip to yourself and download it to the new computer?

Unizip the zip when you get it copied to the new computer.
    There can be only one.

You need to have Alpha 5 Developer version AND/OR the RunTime installed as well as the application on the new computer.
If you have given the new computer the same name. you may have problems registering the Installation.
You can have 2 Dev versions installed of Alpha - usually one on a Laptop, one on a desktop but it doesn't matter much.
There are usually unlimited installations of Runtime.
If it's an application you purchased, you need to contact the vendor. Else, come back and we will be able to assist I'm sure.

We didn't Backup the database so we don't need to Restore it.

Open A5, use the File menu, Open Database, navigate to where you unzipped the database files.

Do you have a suggested place to save it? I can unzip the files, but regardless of where I save it, A5 won't recognize it. Could I call you?

My hearing is not very good.

On the old machine, you have all of the tables and sets in one directory? Use the detail view of the control panel, Tables/Sets tab to check.
Are the database definition files in the same directory?

On the new machine was the same relative structure created?

                start over?

On the old machine, zip the whole folder where your application is. I suggest pkzip, winzip or jzip(free). copy that by cd, thumb drive, email or. Unszip on new computer to the c:\ drive or whichever drive you are going to use. This should give you the same folder names and structures you had and all the files should be where you had them on the old computer. Your installed alpha5 should have no problems opening the adb you have made.

Are you sure v9 is compatible with win7?

Same as Stan said, only different.

On the new computer that has Win7, I was able to install Alpha 5 v. 9 using the cd that came with the program.

                  v. 9 is only a couple of years old, surely it is compatible. I guess I need to check on that.

                  Thanks

V9 is compatible with Win7. I should menton that you ought to Run it in Compatability Mode
When you run it from the desktop, you should do so as Administrator. [Right click the Alpha Icon, choose Run as Admin...]. Lots of threads about this.
Send me the zipped application if you wish, and I'll test it on Win7 64bit and give you explicit instructions how I got it running - if I do that is.
The content is safe with me and will be deleted once proven. I work in Data Security and follow proscribed procedures.

                      Did you perhaps mean prescribed?

                        LOL!
No, I meant Proscribed but in a different context.
The procedures I use are mostly condemned!
                        Glad someone is awake!
