Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Help with textbook inventory program

On the Input Screen, I have a button that allows one to view/print inventory for a particular room by typing in the room number on a dialog box. Is there a way to have a lookup table/database pop up when the "room inventory" button is pressed and the dialog box pops up?

Re: Help with textbook inventory program

You need to change your xdialog from a type in to a record list-list box which gets the choosable values from a table. I selected the textbook orders table for illustration.

Re: Help with textbook inventory program

I guess I am not seeing the forest through the trees cause I can't even see where I can make the changes you suggest. Please help me see where I need to go to make this change. Also, I am trying to do a table lookup in which only the room numbers from that particular school shows. What I did is create another table and form which I call location where the fields are school; room number; and description. When I create a new record, and advance to the room_number field, I would like just those room numbers from the location.dbf to show. Now, all show.
Here are some of the things I have done and tried:
        query.filter="school= var->school"
As you can see, I do a lot of trial and error.

thanks as always. Sorry about some of these questions--they are very difficult to me.

Curretnly your Room Inventory button plays a script, room inventory, which displays an xdialog box prompting for the room_number variable value.........

Did you create this or did Tom Baker?

In any event, you need to start over in the design of the xdialog. The xdialog you have allows you to enter a string value. What you want is a record list - list box. A record list - list box allows you to select from a list of values obtained from a table.

Re: Help with textbook inventory program

Thanks for your advice on the xdialog--working on it. I have created a table called location and also a form called location. This table has three fields in it: room number; description; and school. On another form, I have a field which is called room number. When you get to that field, there is a drop-down box which allows you to choose the room number according to the description (teacher's name). Since this application is for all schools, I want only the room numbers and descriptions from the school selected in the login menu. When the location tab is selected from the opening menu, the location form shows only those from the selected school. What I have not been able to figure out (I've tried many things which do not work) is to have only the records from the location table appear in the drop-down table. All records appear. I've played with field rules to trying to filter in the "on enter" event to...........
            Any suggestions??

            Thanks in advance.

Better attach a new sample. There are several ways you could create the dropdown.

Here is the attached application. When you login, use Mamou High School and the password is Alpha. Choose the "Textbook Input" Button. New Record, then when you get to room number, you will see the dropdown from "location table and form" If you directly from the Opening Menu to Location (button), you will see that only the records that belong to Mamou High are displayed.
This is what I want shown on the "Textbook Input" screen when you get to room #.

Re: Help with textbook inventory program

I removed your field rule lookup and made the room number field on the form a record list - combo box. You may want to unzip this to a different location to try it out.

Thanks so much. Worked like I wanted it to. I guess I'm trying to make it more difficult than it has to be. Again, I do appreciate all the help--makes me feel "slow" with some of the simple solutions. Before I ask for help, I do try as many things that I can think of, then I ask for help and you guys are always there.

There are just certain aspects that work better in certain contexts than others. Your field rule approach relied on filtering on the school variable. That can be done but I think the form approach is cleaner.

I did a total inventary solution, but with the WAS. I suggest you explore the ability of the web section of Alpha Five. Works like a charm.

There is also another form from which they can input info detailing textbooks that are transferred to another school. What I would like (am having trouble with this) is that the inventory in that particluar classroom is adjusted to reflect both textbooks (by isbn) that are received and/or transferred to another classroom within that school or another school completely. I have worked on the reports for such and have had some success in the totals in the classroom from books that are received, but not those that are transferred. In the past, this site has been more than helpful and I would appreciate any suggestions/help.
