Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Need help on TIME calculations...

    I am currently working on a project where I need to figure the time spent on the project. I am entering into a table the time spent on the project in rouind numbers of Minutes, Hours and Days. Next I am using Calculated fields to add up the sum of the number of minutes spent on the whole project, the number of hours spent and the number of days spent. What I need is to take the number of minutes and see if it is greater than 60 (60 minutes to the hour) and then subtract the number of hours from the minutes leaving the remainder. Then next do the same for the hours and use 8 instead of 60 since the work day in state government is an 8 hour work day. Then add the number of days from the hours to hopefully come up with the total number of Day, Hours and Minutes spent on the whole project. Could someone please help me in this area?

    Thanks, David

    David,

    See the entry for the mod() function in the docs. It will be of great use to you.

    Assume that your table has a field, TIMESPENT, that tracks the number of minutes you devote to a project. You want to print a report showing this number in hours and minutes. Define and place two calculated fields, called HOURS and MINUTES.

    The expression for HOURS is:

    int(TIMESPENT/60)

    The expression for MINUTES is:

    mod(TIMESPENT,60)
    There can be only one.

      Re: Need help on TIME calculations...

      What I am attempting to do is basically a time log where I will make an entry each time I work on the project whether it is making a 10 minute phone call, sending a email with attachment in approximately 5 minutes, work on the actual project for 1 hour and 25 minutes, etc... Each entry has the action performed, date performed, scheduled with, location of the performance of the action, and the reason for the action or in other words regarding. Each entry has time entries of "Minutes, Hours, and Days" each being a seperate field ie: Minutes field, Hours field and Days field. Typically an entry should be (time wise) ie: 1 hour and 20 minutes, etc.
      Next I am using the function Total(fieldname, Group, Group) to total up the minutes, total up the hours and total up the day. What I need to do is after the minutes are totaled up for all of the entries pretaining to each project, calculate the number of hours from the overall total of the minutes, sutract the hours and then add the hours to the hours field; calculte the hours add to this field the number of hours from the minutes calculated, then calculate the number of days from the hours calculation and move the number of days to the Days field and then add to the Days Spent field.

        Re: Need help on TIME calculations...

        Given the total minutes, the days and hours and remaining minutes are easily calculated.

        Code:
        min = 687
        days = int(min/480)
        hrs = int((min-(days*480))/60)
        minutes = mod(min,60)
        ? days
        = 1
        ? hrs
        = 3
        ? minutes
        = 27

        min = 442
        days = int(min/480)
        hrs = int((min-(days*480))/60)
        minutes = mod(min,60)
        ? days
        = 0
        ? hrs
        = 7
        ? minutes
        = 22
        There can be only one.

          Re: Need help on TIME calculations...

          Attached you will see a screen shot of the data entry screen that I am doing on the time spent portion of my database for my project. As you can see, I can have multiple examinees with multiple exams and each exam needs to be calculated seperately. I tried your suggestion and could not get it to work. Unfortunately I am a novice at this and just know enough to be dangerous. Currently I am using the Total() function to calculate the minutes, hours and days seperately for the total time spent on each exam. Therefore if the exam has a cumlative total of 70 minutes, it needs to be displayed in the box on the extreme right as 1hour and 10 minutes.

            You have a calculated field with some name (lets suppose tot_min) whose expression is Total(fieldname, Group, Group) filling in the appropriate values

            Define three more calculated fields.

            days = int(calc->tot_min/480)
            hrs = int((calc->tot_min-(calc->days*480))/60)
            minutes = mod(calc->tot_min,60)

            and place these three calculated fields on your form.
            There can be only one.
