Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: How To Create Tables in MySQL

I decided to go MySQL because I read that it networks much better than DBF, though i now know that, I never expected the great number of issues I ran into when I networked a POS software I'm creating, All works well in development, but on the server, it just didn't perform the same way: Forms failed to open, giving me messages that the tables cannot be accessed because they are in use elsewhere. Also Queries did not run correctly.

This software will be used by a cashier for retail stores sales 16 hours every day of the week entering sales, the inventory girl needs to be on it 8 hours everyday adding and editing products, at that same time the manager and the accountants, need to be on it running various queries and reports.

Its already sad that, thats 4 people and I have only a 3 user runtime, but what's worst is that the form and reports refuse to open at times because od being locked elsewhere, ever when the cashier is the only other user on the system.

I would really love for my published runtime app to operate in the store just as it does on my PC.

Re: How To Create Tables in MySQL

I have heard "more secure", "better for the web" and believe those. DBF was being used as a server db before sql was developed. It just depends on the application environment.

      It can.

Something is not quite right in the programming area.

      1. using shadow is a plus.
      2. not using hard coded paths like g:\myfolder\table.dbf - better to just use "table.dbf" - depends what you are doing
      3. There is a lot more.

I thought v9 had unlimited runtime???

Re: How To Create Tables in MySQL

I do use the Shadow database and the network optimized feature.
I never use any hard coded paths, I don't know if thats being done automatically.
And I do believe that something is wrong in the programing, but I don't know what it is, Ive followed all guidelines, All except for LFQ, I couldn't quite understand what the instructions in the help was saying to do.

When I bought V9, maybe there was an unlimited Runtime version, but at the time the 3 user is what I could have afford, so thats what i have from then until now.
If I could deliver a properly working ap I might be able to get V11, but until then V9 is all I have.

Re: How To Create Tables in MySQL

I may get corrected and forgive if I am wrong? I may have the wrong version!

They came out with a numbered user runtime and later just made it unlimited instead of 3 5 10 etc. They also had the run engine that was a pay per seat that was dropped. If you got it 6 months after it came out, you should have unlimited, I think. I had v7 20 user and basically skipped 8 except for the developer and got 9, 10 and 11, I think.

I would call sales and ask them about it.

Re: How To Create Tables in MySQL

Wow! Seriously! I bought V8, V9 came out like a week or so later and I got the upgrade for free. So if the unlimited runtime was release 6 months later, I never got that version.

Thanks for the advice Dave; now, if only u could tell me why my runtime app is misbehaving.

Be careful. I could be wrong.
I been searching and all I can find is my runtime engine files - haven't been able to locate the numbers for it though.
              I have v7 8 10 and 11? LOL

Re: How To Create Tables in MySQL

Actually, you can't use WCD in v9. Would have to be v11, maybe v10? Anyway, you're not going there. There's really no way of knowing why you are having the table locks and so forth w/o seeing your app. But it seems that w. such a small number of users it "should" easily work w/o those problems. It's really hard to comment w/o more info.

Question guys, If I install the published runtime software on one of the workstations, thereby making it both station and server at the same time, could that be the reason for the issues?

I would think not, Nigel. For years I ran Alpha peer to peer where my machine was both server and work station.

Re: How To Create Tables in MySQL

Probably, your runtime can't find the SQL Server because (maybe) your server is configured to use "local host" ? Can you remember doing that? In which case your runtime will try to find its very own "localhost" which does not exist...... you will need to set another Host on your SQL Server / MySQL Server.

Sorry for the late response, for some reason I'm never notified of response.
The app in question doesn't use MySQL, it uses .DBF
