Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Couple of questions.
    1. Have you recreated the indeces.
    2. Is the new version a simple " lift and shift" of the original.

Losing data is usually associated with crapola indeces. Try a reindex. If you can see the data afterwards, it's a coding issue. If not it's an infrastructure issue.
    All are resolvable.

    Hi Judith,

Just a hunch, but have you checked that the server files are not shadowed? I have had this happen when trying to copy updated files to the server from my development copy. It can get tricky...

    Hi Judith,

You have my sympathy. I too am still an Alpha amateur and I know how frustrating it can get when you can't resolve an issue.

Are you saying the database still works correctly on the standalone PC but not on the server? If that is the case it would obviously point to your server/network setup. What do you mean by 'shared server' and what operating system is the server running? Presumably you still have your developer on a PC with just the data files on the server. Have you had many instances of Alpha crashing/freezing?

Just clutching at straws, is there much difference now between the database total file size on the server compared with the original standalone database?

Sorry its all questions and no answers!

Shadow database - not working properly

    Hi,

Some of you will already know that I have recently moved our customer/invoicing database to a shared server with 4 pc's having a run time applications. The database consists of tables and sets and the set I am having problems with is the most important. It is for raising invoices. A colleague enters the person/company details saves the record then clicks a button for a new invoice. They go on to enter the invoice details and the record is saved again. A checking sheet is printed and checked back to the booking, an invoice is printed as a pdf and emailed, an entry is made in a memo field to say the invoice has been sent. All works fine BUT when we go back to the data, the customer details are there but no invoice, it doesn't matter which computer I check it on or if I go through the developers licence straight to the server, the invoices have disappeared. It isn't happening all the time and up to today had not happened before. We have been entering the data twice prior to today. Once on the old system and again on the server to check that everything was working ok and it was.

As you can probably guess I'm not an IT person, just an admin person who has managed to work with Alpha Software for some 15 years now, I must be a slow learner

Any advice would be really appreciated, I'm at home now but can't get this out of my head.

    Judith
