Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5v1.0.0 and Win XP SP2

I typed my issue in another topic here but afraid it may be buried, so I will paste it here:

    ""
I'm having the problem that jerry brightbill mentioned; data files can be created, deleted, etc, but NOT edited.

We had win 98 boxes for two users that use a consultant developed drug court system for us....like 10 years ago and though new software will replace this within 8 months, they need a fix NOW.

What I did was set up new win xp boxes (Dell) and since we don't have the diskettes anymore to do an install onto the XP (the program/data is on a 5.x Novell server)I just copied the shortcut and from the win98 desktop and I was surprised, but it does work.....like I said, all except when editing records. It doesn't crash, it just does not write the edited info to the file. Puzzling to me, to say the least. This appears to be the only problem we have.

Can this be fixed simply? I have no program diskettes to run an install on the local box, since we can't find the originals. Help!

I am NOT the programmer that created this and only did minimal work in A5 YEARS ago that I have forgotten all that I did do.

We have winxp running on a majority of machines here, but we don't have the problems you show. the only problem we encounter is that sometimes we cannot edit scripts that we created. I keep an old win'95 box around for when that happens.

Are your users runing a compiled runtime version? Is there some sort of permission issue with the server? You said that you dragged a shortcut from the server onto the new boxes. Does that mean that ther server is actually running the applications? As far as permissions goes, make sure that your users have full access privilege to the database folder on the server. If not, there can be big problems.

I hope some of this helps.

    Tom

PS, Are you running 1.0 or 1.02?? If not 1.02, then download the patches and do the update.

      Thanks for responding.....

The app is running on a novell server with the data residing there as such. It is version 1.0.0......

If I apply the patch, it is foolproof? I say this because if it causes a problem, no one here knows what to do with it...

Now, you say 'edit scripts'.....not sure exactly what that means....but in our case, when the user has a record open and goes to the comment box to enter data, clicks to save, it just wipes it out and does not save it. Looking at it, when he hits the save button (consultant designed system) the text disappears as if he hit an 'auto erase' button.

The patch is somewhat tricky in that you need to erase the original readme file and replace it with the one supplied with the patch BEFORE you run the patch. This is because the verification will fail and the patch will not get intalled.

Since you asked about scripts, I am guessing that you do not have a development version of the software.

Your issue with the notes seems like they aren't really opening for edit. I have seen that where you double click on a "memo" field, it opens up and all seems like it is OK, but the field is not in change mode. So it looks like everything is fine, you seem to be entering information, but the field is not open for edits. To be sure, when you are on a note field, hit "C" for change, then double click on the field or click on the little pencil icon. This should open up a memo editor window. All of the buttons on the right of the window should be clickable (not dulled out) If they are not, then you are not in "change" mode.

          Tom,

This was developed by a consultant for the courts.....I am not sure what we have, but I am pretty sure it is the development version that we have. Is there something to click on to see for sure? All I know is that the user opens a record, and in one of the boxes they have for comments, i.e., appeared in court, took drug test, etc, then they click on 'save' and the text they just entered just disappears.....

RE: A5v1.0.0 and Win XP SP2

            Dave,

When you click on "help" on top of the screen, is the "about alpha5" grayed out? If so, then this is a runtime version. Do you have an Alpha5 application program, not just the "courts" program? Is the memo field on a form (screen) or in a browse layout? Whenyou click in the field, is there an icon that appears at the right end of the field that looks like a pencil? can you verify that you are in Change mode? when the screen appears, type ""ALT"" V and then type "p". This should show the "speed bar" There should be 4 icons/buttons about 1/2 way across the bar. If you are in view mode, they are all grayed out. if you are in change mode, the right 2 of these icons should not be grayed out.

I know I am asking a lot of questions, but without seeing anything, I can't quite determine where you are. I have attached a small demo of what I am talking about.

That would work. Why don't you just send it to my e-mail. I don't necessarily check the forum all the time, and that would cut out a lot of miscommunication.
