Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    MS 2000/NT issues?

    Hello everyone,

I see many threads about XP and 2000 in hear and I think I'm in trouble :(. Could I still ask the question???? :)

I have had A5V1.0.2 working just fine for my application at a local hospital, but about a year ago they upgraded to MS 2000/NT for network purposes there. The app has been doing ok until a week ago. Now all of a sudden there's an issue:

When I tried to upgrade them with some field rule changes (record event) it totally closed Alpha out to the desktop! I thought maybe the dictionaries got corrupt or the main program got corrupt, but I totally deleted Alpha off the HD and then reinstalled. Still didn't fix it - same thing with field rule change. Seems like everything else went ok until we opened up a form that we make changes to each record. In one column it put y's before we even entered change mode? In another column it put f's. Seems a form refresh or index change clears them temporarily. This is scary - the data is very important.

Do you think their MS2000/NT configurations might be causing problems? I'm trying to get them upgraded to A5V5 but afraid I'm not going to get it done soon :(.

Any help ful suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

    Thanks,
    Mac

I hate to tell you this, but there may not be a good solution. A5V1 was designed for Windows 3.0, 3.1. It worked ok up through Win98 and WinME, but not in Win2000 and newer. If you make a change in Win2000, it may or may not work. It can easily corrupt the whole database. I currently have one application in V1 running on Win2000 Pro, but I don't make many changes to the application. I have a backup copy originally made in Win98 that I use to restore files when they get corrupted. Sometimes I will try a change in Win2000 and see if it still works. If it blows up, I still have the backup (actually, I have three original backups in different places, just in case). The last time I had to make a major change, I changed the program on a computer running Win98. I still have an old computer running WinME that I can use for changes if needed.

If the files get corrupted, about the only solution is restoring using a good backup copy. You could try using the maintenance option to try to clean the data dictionaries, but if the corruption is from a problem with Win2000 compatibility, it probably won't work.

Converting directly to A5V5 and newer may not be that easy either. If you had no scripts and a very basic design, it should convert ok. However, my app uses lots of scripts and when I tried to convert, the result was a mess. I did manage to convert part of the app to A5V5, but I left the bulk of it in V1. Eventually, I will have no choice to move to V5 or V6. Most of my work is in A5V6, so keeping the old app around is a real pain.

      Jerry,

Thanks so much for the info!!! :) I'm like you tho' , I did save backups and I do have a ME platform that Iam now going to do all the changes on - whew! I wasn't sure what had happened, but you sure helped me out there :).

I went down today and reinstalled my backup dictionaries on their system, but boy it was tempting to do a little change here and there :( -

Thanks again Jerry - I really appreciated that explanation!

I keep an old win'95 machine around because my main development machine is windows 2000, but I still need to fix scripts, etc in our production system. Most times, There isn't a problem changing the scripts, but I've had enough blow up that I now just do any script modification using te old machine. Like Jerry said, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE GOOD BACKUPS. Those little tapes have been a lifesaver.
