Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    New Record???

    The following code opens a form to new record mode. What in the code tells it to open this way? I checked the actions events in the form that is opened (called) and all are empty.

    Thanks,

    kenn

    if is_object("EEI") then

    EEI:account_numbr.value=browse1:account number.value

    EEI:Localaccount_numbr.value=browse1:account number.value

    EEI.show()
    EEI.activate()

    else
    form.load("EEI")

    EEI:account_numbr.value=browse1:account number.value

    EEI:Localaccount_numbr.value=browse1:account number.value

    EEI.show()
    EEI.activate()
    end if

    RE: New Record???

    Kenn,

    Is the form empty? Thye default action on an empty table is to go to enter mode. This can be disabled by changing the properties to initially not allow enters.

      RE: New Record???

      Ken,

      The main scripting to start with a new record would be put on either a button (on push) or On Init on a form. This would be

      parent.new_record()

      also I have found it useful for an application to restrict the form via properties and restrict all so as to control any possible errors for example you can then put before new record th following which then allow new form entry only on this form.

      this.disable() - this stops double clicking on a button (not required on form init)
      parentform.restrict_delete=.t.
      parentform.restrict_enter=.f.
      parentform.restrict_change=.t.
      parentform.restrict_navigation=.t.
      parent.new_record()
      parentform:cust_id.activate() - this places the cursor at the field specified ie cust_id in this instance.
      this.enable() - this resets the button (button only) back so that it can again be clicked.

      Hope this helps you

      Mike

        Ira,

        No, it's not empty. There are several hundred records. It's supposed to open the form so that the items linked to the account number can be viewed or edited.

        Thanks,

          Hi Mike,

          My intention is NOT to open in the new record mode but only to view or edit an existing record. Your suggestion is interesting and one Ill keep in mind.

          Thanks,

            RE: New Record???

            Ken, is it possible there is a formname.new_record() statement earlier in your script? The pattern you began with (my passing values example) included just that, in two places within the script.

            I've gone back to my example and commented out these two lines. The opening of the called form does not, by itself, trigger a new record to begin.

            However, when your script writes values to fields in the current record - as displayed on the called form - the form will go into change mode automatically.

              **However, when your script writes values to fields in the current record - as displayed on the called form - the form will go into change mode automatically.**

              Why does mine do the above and your's doesn't? If both scrpts are the same, except for names, shouldn't they act the same?

              Thanks,

                RE: New Record???

                Hi Ken,

                As Ira indicated, the only time your syntax BY ITSELF should open up a new record is if there are no records in the table OR if there was an index or query that was active that didn't find/contain any records. Then in essence (as far as this instance of the form is concerned) there are no records in the table even though the table may contain many records.

                Good luck,
                Jim
