Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    SIMPLE QUESTION FROM A BEGINNER

I have been using alpha4v6 for many years and consider myself to be somewhat of an expert. I just received alpha5 and its driving me crazy trying to figure this thing out. I have created a form with a tabbed subform. When entering data in the last field on the tabbed page, how do I get it to go to the next tabbed page automatically to keep entering data. Now when I press enter on the last field, it stays on the same page and starts a new record. I'm sure this is a simple procedure, but because of the poor documentation and intructions, I cant seem to find it anywhere. I created a script that clicks on the next tab, but I cant even figure out how to play a script yet. Alpha4 field rules allowed you to designate a script to play on exit of the field, I can't seem to find that in Alpha5 field rules. I would appreciate any help.

Bobby, a lot of users place a small hidden button as the last object on each tab to enable navigation to the next tab. I suggest you go to Learnalpha.com and click on articles, go down to one titled "Foolproof Tabbed Subforms". It's way down the list. Maybe even print it out. It will give you a good understanding of Tabbed subforms.

You mention A4v6 fields rules & A5 field rules. Well first of all, A5 is an EVENT Driven DB while A4v6 is a key driven DB. Check out the A5 Field object events on a Form , you have many choices, such as OnChange, CanDepart or OnDepart.

Frankly I will never even consider going back to A4v6 - A5 is so much better. I have turned down several Clients that required making A4v6 changes. You can do things that are really either impossible or not even feasable in A4v6. There is a learning curve - but I would never go back.

Bobby: I'm kinda new at this as well and a former A4 guy for many years. I've been following this thread and think this new guy can help you-the other new guy.

      Use the script recorder!

With the 1st tab 'forward' [in view mode] turn on the Script Recorder and click the second tab. Then click the browse [or the field you want on that second tabbed sheet]. Click the recorder up again and copy the code from it.

Get the thing in design mode and select the last field on that first tab form and right click it selecting 'actions'. In the upper right window for an event pick 'On Depart'. Right click 'Action script'[left pane] and click 'Insert Command'. Press the letter 'I' twice and pick 'Inline Basic'. Now paste that code into the window. You may want to change specific references to 'Parent: ...bla bla'. You probably won't need more than "Parent:TABBED1.Tab_set(2)" and "Parent:BROWSE1.activate()". [these are examples of mine your code would be whatever the recorder got].

Save all that and test it. Exit that field with [Tab] or [Enter] and see if it works.

To get back... Start with the 2nd tab highlighted and forward; turn on the script recorder; and activate the first. Copy that code to the clipboard. YOu know, just select it all and right click picking 'copy'.

      To get back...

Design mode again with that second tab forward. Draw a button on it - call is &Return - right click for actions and pick Insert command, "Inline Basic", paste that code into the window. Save all that. Just like the other one above but with this new code to get you got back from the script recorder. With the '&' in front of the 'R' on the button title. [Ctrl-R] should 'key' you back to the first tab. My button shows...'Parent:TABBED1.activate() - Parent:TABBED1.tab_set(1) - Parent:CUSTID.activate()'. Again, yous will be whatever the recorder got.

If you just want your user to use the Ctrl-R key to navigate, pick properties on the button and choose 'Hide'.

I hope this is clear. If you need more help e-mail me. We're currently working on the same kind of thing and can probably help each other.

RE: SIMPLE QUESTION FROM A BEGINNER

The following is a solution that I got from this board and was posted by Dan Blank.

You need to make a button for each tab page. (I hide the button). Then attach the following script to the OnArrive event of each button.

        tabbed1.tab_set(2)
        sys_send_keys("{tab}")

Include the buttons in your tab order.

On line one you'll notice the number 2. That sends it to the second tab page. On page 2 change that to a 3 and on page 3 change it to a 1. (to get back to the first page, assuming you have 3 tabbed pages).

This has worked great for me.
