Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Windows 2000 "fix"?

The IT Dept gave me a new computer with Windows 2000, and installed Alpha5 v4.5

When opening Alpha, I encounter: "Failed to update the system registry. Please try using REGEDIT". Anyone know WHERE TO FIND REGEDIT, or what it is?

Also, once I click OKAY, I get one of my control panels. When I click on a table, I encounter the following: "Error cannot find specified card occurred while trying to start application". Anyone know what this convaluted sentence means?

    Thanks!

    RE: Windows 2000

Wanda, try searching this forum for similar occurrences. I think Alpha Five is being blocked from writing values to your system registry, possibly by the default security setup in your new operating system. Alpha Five uses the Registry to store information about your setup and recently opened databases. It sounds to me as though your IT folks were unaware of this, and did not provide you with access to the Registry on your new machine. -- tom

      Wanda.....

To add to what Tom said..... I don't think it wise for you
to edit the registry. If things are as Tom suspects, the
safest thing to do would be to uninstall & re-install Alpha5
after your OS is configured to allow alpha5 to write
      to the registry.

I would think that the installation would fail if security
was set to prevent writing to the registry..... but you say
      that the installation went OK?

Just so you will know, Regedit is a utility that comes with
      Windows.....

You can start it from the "START" menu by selecting
"RUN" and typing "regedit" ..... just be careful what
you do with the registry....it is posible to really
      mess things up!

        RE: Windows 2000

        Wanda,

To install software in windows 2000, many require that you have administrative privledges. (You must be part of the administrator group or be logged in as administrator) Have your IT folks install the software as administrator, and I'm sure your problem will be solved. I have never had a problem with Win2k.

          RE: Windows 2000

Thank you, Tom, Doug, and Bill. I have searched for other strings relative to the same problem I am having and didn't find any. Also, our IT Dept did install A5 under Administrator.

I will print out this string and present it to the IT dept to see if the suggestions solve the problem.

I love this message board - and figured I'd get several ideas/suggestions rather quickly...posted them right before I left work - and WALA! Here they are, bright and early this morning.

          THANKS!

I'll let you know if these suggestions fix the prob.

Just to let you know that the IT dept fixed the problem by making me a "power user". I don't know what this really means, but IT said that some of you would understand it. Thanks, again, for your suggestions :)
