Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Invalid Date Constant

    It's Hot! It's Humid!! What Frustration!!!!

    I created a simple tabular report based on a single table. No groups. Went to the Reports Script window, clicked the down arrow to see 2 OnPrintExit events and 2 OnPrintInint events. Is there not supposed to be only one of each?

    I put this code in the OnPrintInit event:

    dim shared start_date as d
    dim shared end_date as d

    startc=ui_get_date("Confessions of Judgment","Please Enter Start Date")
    endc=ui_get_date("Confessions of Judgment","Please Enter End Date")

    start_date=ctod(startc)
    end_date=ctod(endc)

    I created 2 layout variables, start_date and end_date.

    In the Report Detail Property filter, I put:

    Toctyatty_Date>=Var->Start_Date.and.Toctyatty_DateEnd_Date

    Then, I ran the report and got more invalid date constant error messages. Went pack to the reports Script events, clicked the down arrow and found 3 OnPrintExit events and 3 OnPrintInit events. The events are multiplying like rabbits!

    Does anybody have any idea at all what's causing the multiplying of events and the invalid date constants???????

    Thanks,

    kenn

    ps, I think there's smoke comin out my ears.

    Ken:
    Can you post this little test table and report?

    sometimes I use scripts to set dates for reports.
    I call a script and it asks the user for a beginning and ending date
    example
    Beginning date
    ''XBasic
    DIM date1 AS D
    date_string = ui_get_date("date1", "Enter Beginning Date for Selection",dtoc(date())
    If date_string "" THEN
    date1 = CTOD(date_string)
    End If

    Ending date
    ''XBasic
    DIM date2 AS D
    date_string = ui_get_date("date2", "Enter Ending Date for Selection",dtoc(date())
    If date_string "" THEN
    date2 = CTOD(date_string)
    End If

    in the report detail section I use
    report data field>=var->date1 .and. report data field date2

      RE: Invalid Date Constant

      Ken, I'm able to confirm what you are seeing. Using vers. 4.5 (build 266) I also have two OnPrintInit and two OnPrintExit events in the default tabular report for a single table.

      I do not think it's supposed to work this way.

      Suggest you abandon effort to use these events to set the filter in your report.

      There are two easy alternatives:

      1) Define report layout to use 'currently selected records' at print time; then run a query against the table before calling the report.

      - or -

      2) Define two global variables in your report layout to hold the values for your date range; Define a filter expression in your report layout that selects all records between() the two date variables; Then get the beginning and ending dates from the user before calling the report, and store them in the same global variables. This is the approach Charlie is describing, I believe.

        Ken, on further examination I see that the duplicative events disappear if you save the report layout first. When you next open the report layout in design mode the 'actions' for the report contain only a single instance of OnPrintInit and OnPrintExit. Thought you'd want to know.

          Tom,

          Thanks for checking and confirming that I haven't completely melted in our heat and humidity. One question that remains, as long as it malfunctions part of the time, does that mean it'll be OK the rest of the time?

          I'll work on it this evening.

          Thanks again,

            RE: Invalid Date Constant

            Tom,

            The multiple events appear whenever the Report Genie is used. I have confirmed this on both my computer at home and the one at work using separate databases. I created a 3 field tabular report with the genie. Checked the events before and after saving the report. It showed multiple events.

            Looks like its a problem with the genie? Not so sure because I have other databases and all reports action events are single; no duplicates.

            However, I have come up with the event 'OnRecord' when checking the Report's Action events. This occurred in 2 separate databases. Sometimes closing the report and reopening in design mode showed the propper events.

            Your thoughts?
