Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Out of memory problems

I purchased single user version of Alpha4 V4 in December 1994 from an ASC UK agent in Ivybridge, Plymouth, Devon under license No. AJ1T9S69. Until recently I have run the program successfully under DOS on a 486 PC originally with Windows 3.1 but later upgraded to Windows 98. That machine has recently failed. I re-installed Alpha4 on my other, newer, PC - a 400mh Intel Celeron PC with 64Mb of RAM and a 4GB hard drive - but cannot get Alpha4 to operate successfully. Each time I try to access a file I get the error message 'out of memory'. Can anyone help? I have implemented a number of extremely useful financial and stock trading systems on Alpha 4 and have found it effective and robust. I have experimented with Microsoft Access for some of these applications and found it far less effective for my needs. I confess to being a novice on the internet; this is virtually my first attempt

    RE: Out of memory problems

    Hi Mike,

Sorry I can't help; however, you've posted your Alpha4 question to the Alpha5 portion of the board. Some of the folks more versed in Alpha4 probably have an answer. To find the Alpha4 forum, just scroll a little further down the index of formus and you'll find it.

      Mike:

Like Ohlen says, you might fair better on the Alpha 4 VERSION 4 message board. Come in again on that msg board.

But... I have a few questions.. Are you starting your application using ALPHA.EXE or using the A4.BAT?

For example, you've moved A4 to a new environment, and, as I understand it, when A4.bat fires it does a memory check and, I beleive, writes the findings into a file that Alpha references each time it starts after that. Starting the program with ALPHA.EXE bypasses that feature and the file doesn't get updtated.

Also, if you're in Windows M.E. on the new machine, there are several issues to be handled. There are several posts regarding this on the A4 V4 board which you must certainly visit.

      Good luck

      Ken
