Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

As promised, here's a sampler platter of tints to play with.

Remember, if you want to overlay one tint on top of another (like the buttons on my form - the tinted button is on top of the tinted frame which is on top of the marble background), it is important to align the pixels or you will get a 50% mix of the 2 tints and no transparency effect.

If you add a 2nd layer of tint and lose the transparency, just shift the new layer one pixel in any single direction.

    Have fun,
    Bob

Sorry for the delay... been a busy beaver lately.

I think I'll post a webpage tutorial on the subject, but here goes an attempt at a brief explanation:

Many of you probably already know of the 'transparent' (usually border area) bitmaps included in A5. If you open one of these bitmaps in MS Paint, you'll see that it isn't really transparent, but uses a special color (R=255, B=255, G=0... comes out to magenta) So, anything magenta in your bitmap, in A5 will be transparent.

To make a semi-transparent color, start with a new bitmap (say 1" square, but any size is ok... set to 'tile' in A5 bitmap properties, so size doesn't matter, except it may affect speed of redraws). Paint the whole thing magenta. Now pick the color for your 'transparency' and fill in every other pixel, like so (easy way is to draw diagonal lines):

...and here's an idea I've been playing with: Semi-transparency.

The background bitmap is marble, the indented frame and 6 buttons use my 'patented technique' ;-) of semi-transparent bitmaps to throw a tint over the marble. If you look closely, you can tell the marble pattern is not broken at the edges of objects... because it is the actual background bitmap you see, not fragments pieced together.

This sample has various colors as examples, the real menu uses a more conservative semiwhite buttons on a semi-dark gray frame. On slow machines this method can lead to slow screen redraws.

Do you like it? Anyone interested in a detailed how-to?

    Hi Jeff

Thought you might like to see what your design inspired. Do not hold Jeff responsible for what you see !!!!

My client wanted something different for his forms. The companys colors / logo are green (Surprise!!). The background was done in illustrator using two gradient colors. The buttons are transparent with a green raised border. The "Main Menu" title is a text object with a transparent background and no border.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

By the way do you have significant button flicker when the form intializes. I do.

I give...after waiting an eternity, I again received the message that the "file is empty". This is after zipping it, sending it, receiving the error message, zipping it again, sending it again, receiving the same message!!!

So, I give. Whomever wants the file can email me directly, perhaps MS Outlook can handle the document, itself.

    Regards!

Hmmm...I wrote a post, attempted to attach a Word file, and ended up at the Alpha Home Page...will try again.

Attached (hopefully!) is the Word document I created out of all the screenshots. I have edited it for ease of reading, and am assuming that no one objects to this, particularly since the screenshots were all posts, in the first place.

All comments are welcome, of course. I hope you enjoy this compilation - it's full of great ideas, thanks to everyone who was so willing to share.

    Enjoy!

    Rodney,
This is a marvelous thread - thanks to your original idea and to everyone who has so generously shared!!!

I've screenshotted the screenshots..okay, I'll try to act professional...I've print screened the screenshots, along with the narrative of its respective post, and pasted everything into a Word document. I'm not editing the document for ease of reading.

My intention was to use the document to show examples of the many different ways Alpha can "look", and how loaded it is with features and capabilities. The Governor (Calif) cut 45% of the funding of the program that I use Alpha for, and consequently my supervisor wants me to free up 45% of my time so he can put me on various problem-solving projects. I DON'T WANT TO BE A PROBLEM-SOLVER! I WANT TO CONTINUE DEVELOPING WITH ALPHA!!!

So I am feverishly trying to talk my employer into letting me organize the department with Alpha.

I am happy to post the document when I have it completed. I am wondering, though, if I need to get permission to post the document, due to me not authoring the pictures/layouts. I assume that anything on this forum is public domain, but want to be totally assured of that before offering up the document.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

    Thanks!
    Wanda
