Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    FOLDER CHOICE

What is the command to open up the windows folder command. The one that is a one line box with a yellow folder at the end of it?

I don't have a copy of the documentation with me but isn't it UI_Get_File()?

You can use UI_GET FILE() with a specified folder - it pops up with the folder open and a list of matching files. If there are subfolders, those are available to open also.

Or do you need something different?

I am sorry if i Didn't explain myself better.
I am using an append command to choose 4 tables and append
to 4 master tables. The append action looks for a folder with the name od "test" then appens the 4 tables in the folder.
I want to be able to choose adifferent path for this folder.
It will not always be in the same directory.
          Thanks.

So, you want to be able to browse drives and folders, but not files, right? I don't know of a way to do that, but will be watching for suggestions from others.

Wouldn't it be possible to browse for one of the four files, and then parse the path, cutting out the filename, leaving behind the drive and folder names?

              RE: FOLDER CHOICE

I have a backup script where I put zip files in a folder other than the application. The backup is a zip file of the entire contents of the application folder - if I put it in the same folder I would be backing up the prior zip files, and getting bloated zips..

So I have a directory called "backup" on the same level as the application. I wrote this script to be portable, all you need to know is that the backaup directory will be at the same level as the application directory.

'Get current path with open wildcard
cpath = :A5.Get_Path() ' gets the current application path
bpath = substr(cpath,1,AT(chr(92),cpath,-1))+"Backup" 'backup path is a directory on the same level as app.

I also use Restore as an option and it is a little simpler (fewer options)

dir_put(bpath) 'switch to the backup folder
              rfile = ui_get_file("Choose backup file to restore","*.zip")
              If rfile = ""
              end
              end if
              sys_shell(PwrAchvr+" -e "+rfile+" "+cpath,1) ' this runs PowerArchiver as a shell to restore
dir_put(cpath) 'restore active directory to current path

                RE: FOLDER CHOICE

The problem is this. I am sharing this database with 2 other users. After adding entries, they e-mail me back a folder with all the files I need to append. I wrote an append script to append these files. It always points to the same directory. ( no choices). I want to be able to send them my finished files for them to append. I guess I could tell them that the folder has to be in the directory that I specify. However, I thought that if they can choose the directory path for the folder, they could put the folder anywhere.
                Thanks. for the help.

                  RE: FOLDER CHOICE

Here's an example which illustrates how ui_get_file() might be used to obtain a correct drive and path to the folder containing the files to be appended. It's what I had in my first message in this thread. Perhaps this example will clarify things a bit.

As ususal unzip the attachment to a separate folder. Do not mix it with your development work.

Open the Names1 form. Push the GetFolder button. Have fun.

This is beautiful! I thought we had to wait for V5 for this functionality.

                    Your contributions are sure appreciated.

THanks Tom- that did it. I'm surprised that alpha doesn't have this function built in.
                      Thanks again.

Jeff, glad to hear that it's going to work for you.

As for not being built in... I don't remember anyone ever asking about it before. You might want to drop Tech Support a line to request that it be added.
