Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Server issue?

    I'm getting desparate and hoping somebody here can point me in the right direction.

    I've recently installed a new app for a new customer. The computers are brand new (purchased just for this upgrade from A4), running Win98SE, and are used almost exclusively for the A5 app. The network is simply using the Win98 networking (not NT, etc.) and has 5 computers on the network with one computer used only as the server.

    The app uses the Customers table to find a customer (currenly over 20,000 customers) and then opens a form based on a set with 4 tables linked one-to-many. This form is opened with a query so that only orders for that customer number will be shown. They then add/enter orders as necessary.

    Orders->
    ->Order_items
    ->Payments
    ->Customers (to show customer name, number, etc. on order form)

    The app works flawlessly on my stand-alone system. It also seems to work flawlessly with 2 networked computers. Unfortunately, they need to have 4 people entering orders at the same time.

    When more than 2 users on on the network, it soon starts to pull up the wrong information when looking up orders. They also sometimes get the infamous "Cannot resynch on index" error but this does not necessarily coincide with the look up problems. They have also said that the problems seem to start after they see a blue line at the bottom that looks like the line that runs during the network optimize. I have not seen this line and have no idea why it appears - sounds like some kind of refresh???

    I've tried creating different forms, different sets, and made a few other minor A5 changes. Two network experts, one I know well and trust, looked at the network and find nothing wrong. Nothing seems to fix the problem but if I can't fix it soon I may have to refund their money because the app is currently un-usable.

    Has anyone run into something similar and found a fix? All ideas appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Cal

    RE: Server issue?

    I'll just offer a dumb idea that you've probably already considered.

    My experience with the "blue line" is that it represents reindexing or query building. Since you are using a query "so that only orders for that customer number will be shown", with multiple person data entry the query could be out of date moments after the record(s) are displayed.

    Could you make your system use an index rather than the query?
    There can be only one.

      Have you mapped each user computer to a similiar drive ie drive "g" which relates to the application folder.

      Also have you checked for orphaned children on your clients system.

      Check each computer to make sure a copy of the data does not reside at another location that you are unaware of. (ending with a preposition-ouch)

      To help verify that an individual computer on the system is at fault, disconnect all computers. Add each computer into the application one at a time. Only add the next computer when you are sure that the computers on the system aren't having the problem. Some network cards,unfortunately do not die, but linger linger and linger.

        RE: Server issue?

        I'm not saying for sure that this is the problem but about three years a go I did an app for a company that had four system all running win98. They were entering about 1,000 transtions on a dialy bases. With only two users we had no problems but with three it all went to hell. I changed the server over to NT Server 4.0 and the workstations to NT4.0 workstation. Almost all of the problems stopped. The app was much more stable and that was a5v3.

        I have other customer running win98 with three and four workstations without any problems. But they don't do any where near the data entry.

          Cal, the first thing that comes to mind is the notion of simplifying the data entry design. Using a set with 4 tables for data entry, in the multi-user environment you describe, may be a contributing factor.

          Review this article by Dr. Wayne for background and suggestions.

            Thanks for all the good ideas. (If anyone has another idea, please post it!) I also received a few by direct e-mail. I expect to be working on this for a few days and will post the solution once I find it.

              Cal,

              If course it could be anything. But for your information, I have multiple users entering data into a similar set. However, our network is Novell.

              You say the form "opens with a query." So does mine but once again, for your info I use the user logon to set the filter properties of the form so the user can never escape from the query to show all records.

              Sorry I can't be more helpful.

                RE: Server issue?

                Cal,

                We use an NT 4.0 server with about 250 win'95 and win'98 uses. We haven't run into that problem. Sometimes, a user will inadvertently keep a "find" open or run a large report in the middle of thae day which messes things up, but no real issue like you have. We use netbios and tcp/ip on our network.

                It may sound sily, but maybe with 4 users banging away, your "server" may not be able to handle all of the locking and unlocking that is necessary.

                  RE: Server issue?

                  Some companies will,in order to save money, try to use a computer for a server. While this might work in most cases, there can be significant problems down the line. Microsoft approves manufactors for the appropriateness of their server machines for their operating systems. Just a thought

                    Hi Bob,

                    Gee, I've always "use a computer for a server". Maybe I should use a toaster?

                    {:-)

                    Of course you really mean companies and people stupid enough to use a workstation computer as a server computer as well!

                    As to Cal's problems, another thread originated by Cal, I hi-lighted the issue with regards to multi-user usage.
