Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Resynch corrupting form

    Hi,

    I am trying to resynch my current form which is a quote so as to fill in any calculated fields etc but each time it puts the quote record back to the 1st one.

    Parent.commit() does what I want to do but then the user does not have a cancel record option.

    I am using parent.resynch() and have tried numerous different versions of it with same results for the ones that work.

    Is this somthing to do with my indexes or what?

    Many thanks for your input.

    RE: Resynch corrupting form

    Mike, it seems odd to me that your calculated fields are not automatically updating themselves. Describe what happens when you stop trying to resynch the current form. Tell us whether these are calculated field rules (defined at table level), or calculated display variables (defined at form level).

      RE: Resynch corrupting form

      Hi Tom,

      It seems we are talking a lot these days thanks for this.

      ok the set is Quote_Summary (parent)
      --------> Customer (child)
      The form asks for the Customer->Id and then fills in address etc. It then has numerous fields to fill some calculated some not. The calculated fields which relate to numeric fields fill in fine and update when changed but a calc field (all at form level) which gets the 1st and last name from customer table to show together ie first_name + last_name does not show
      unless table is resynched or saved. It also has a script (example below) which fills in del address if required but this does not fill in without script resynch and when resynch used in its scripted it causes it to flash but not show without the record being saved 1st.

      Del Address script:-

      tbl = table.current()
      tbl2 = table.current(2)
      If tbl.del_as_address=.T. then
      tbl.del_address1=tbl2.address1
      tbl.del_address2=tbl2.address2
      tbl.del_city=tbl2.city
      tbl.del_county=tbl2.county
      tbl.del_postcode=tbl2.postcode
      tbl.del_country=tbl2.country
      tbl.del_std_code=tbl2.std_code
      tbl.del_contact_no=tbl2.phone_no
      tbl.del_ext_no=tbl2.ext_no
      Else
      tbl.del_address1=""
      tbl.del_address2=""
      tbl.del_city=""
      tbl.del_county=""
      tbl.del_postcode=""
      tbl.del_country=""
      tbl.del_std_code=""
      tbl.del_contact_no=""
      tbl.del_ext_no=""
      End If
      parent.resynch()
      END

      And finally when another form is opened (same set/table) about 10 fields are blank these are not calc but things like
      Cust_id no which is a repeat of what was filled in previous form etc.

      If you can make head or tail out of this and solve the problem then you are a better man than I (HeHeHe)

      Many thanks tom for your help

      Mike

        RE: Resynch corrupting form

        Mike

        If you want to show the calculated field without saving, try using field object properties to refresh the display for the field. Example. You have a calculated field called "Fullname" which is "firstname +lastname". When the field is put on a form, the default name for the object is the field name, "fullname". So, if the object name is "fullname" use

        parentform:fullname.refresh()

        This will refresh the display of just that object. I have found that using resynch() with a form in enter or change mode sometimes will cause the form to jump back to the previous displayed record. Refresh() changes just one object field and is very reliable.

          RE: Resynch corrupting form

          resynch() fills the fields on a form with the values in the current record. If you're just filling out a form and haven't yet saved the record the only thing Alpha can resyndh() to is the first record it finds; hence the first record in the table is displayed. IOW, you can't resynch() to a record that hasn't been saved. Hope this helps.

            RE: Resynch corrupting form

            Mike,

            Ohlen's right about the resynch() - used refresh() as suggested by Jerry.

            Also, consider if you REALLY need a calculated field that combines first and last names in your table. In many cases, all you need to do is display it on your form or report and that can easily be done with a calculated object on the form. One advantage of calculated objects is that they have always updated immediately. (Older versions of A5v4 did not update calc fields until the record is saved. This was supposed to be changed in v4.5.)
