Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How do I import a database to Access

The person in the job before me used Alpha Five v.4. Our MIS will not support this and unfortunately I have been put in a very awkward position. We have a database log that was used in alpha five and it needs to be converted some how to either Microsoft Access or Excel.

How do I go about either exporting from Alpha Five, or importing to Access or excel? I need ALL the records in the database not just one.

I would appreciate any help on this? Thanks.

    Alicia,

Try a search for import to access and see what you get. Ths Q has been asked B4 but I've not tried it.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

      Alicia,

Sorry you have been forced to work with an inferior tool .

If you right click on a table in the control panel, you will see the word Operation, and from there you should choose New. This will start a genie which will allow you to export records. You should choose either Excel v. 3 or v.4, and continue filling out the card. By default the card chooses all records. You name the Excel file, and choose the option to run the operation without saving it.

You have to repeat this process for each table. When you are done, you will see why the users of Alpha would rather fight than switch.

      Sorry to see you go.

        Alicia:
        Just open excel
        then file open
at the bottom show all file or only dbf's(doesent matter)
navigate to where your databade (table) is select and open.
do a file save as and choose at the bottom, excel workbook

          Alicia,

Alpha Five Data files are accessable as either dBase III or FoxPro formats from Access. From the File Menu in Access, select "Get External Data", then "Import".

Just follow the dialog boxes from there and, voila! They are now Access tables. You might have to go in after the fact to reset some of the field characteristics but, for the most part, it's an easy process.

Note that, of course, you will only be able to import tables; everything else with which you are familiar in the Alpha Five database will have to be rewritten in Access and VBA.

          Hope this helps...

          Regards,

            Jay:
Thank you for your help (as well as the others who responded). Actually, you right click on a TABLE and select OPERATIONS from the drop down menu. Then select DEFINE NEW OPERATION... It will ask which type of operation you want to perform. That is where you select from the Operations List. I chose EXPORT RECORDS. Then the EXPORT GENIE popped up. Here is where you will specify the export file type (chose MS-Excel V4.xls because we use MS Excel 97). At the end of the GENIE, it will ask if you want ALL RECORDS (which is what I chose). You can specify which field to sort the database records by before exporting it.

It worked out pretty well. I had to do this with a few tables and then cut and paste from the separate Excel spreadsheets to get the final spreadsheet that was needed.

            Thanks again! :)
