Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Which Character To Use?

In A4 and doing a search you could enter 412??32 and the search would return any record that had the 412__32 in the field. The ?? was called a wildcard if my memory serves me correctly. How can I duplicate in A5?

    Thanks

    RE: Which Character To Use?

Philip, couldn't the Query Genie help you with this? Use the Query Operator 'field starts with' and specify 412; then use query operator 'field ends with' and specify 32.

Philip, you can also do this with a query by table, using separate expressions.

Haven't found a single character wildcard mentioned in the docs...

        RE: Which Character To Use?

I looked thru the pdf books and there was NO character to perform this check as Alpha had in A4. I will have to use the multiple functions. Just a pain.

          RE: Which Character To Use?

You can try 412*32, however, I think that would return...

          412 32
          412132
          4121232
          41212332
          412123432
          etc.

I'll dig & see what I can find.
          Thank you,

The following are listed query operators in Alpha Five.

            (greater than)
            (not equal to)
            >= (greater than or equal to)
            Thank you,

I'll bet Ira could give us a function, if he had the time.
              There can be only one.

There's very little that Ira can't do and I'm not so sure about that.

                  Indeed...

Ira is a "functional" guy ---- A legend in his own mind!!!

Of course we have all heard of "Car 54 - Where Are You"
Maybe we should change it to:
"Functional Ira - Where Are You?"

                    Thanks

I am sure the Ira character would respond to the $ chracter!

                        RE: Which Character To Use?

                        Philip,

While I understand your need for global wildcard characters, and would like to see something like that in Alpha Five as well, I think that you can simply use the expression:

                        left(alltrim([fieldname here]), 3) = "412" .and. right(alltrim([same fieldname here]), 2) = "32"

to pick up those records. Certainly a function could also be written, but this will now. If you are into writing XBasic, I think that you could also set up an on-the-fly script to take what appears to be wildcard input and "convert" it to a workable query statement.

                        Bets regards,

                        Geoff Hollander
