Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Barry, maybe I'm missing the mark but are you setting it up to use the free table foxpro table format?

      RE: ODBC

Did you create a "Transoft" .ini file, named after your Transoft database?

Did you place that file in the Windows directory?

Did you create a USER DSN in the 32-Bit ODBC Data Sources control panel, named after the .ini file above?
      There can be only one.

        RE: ODBC

        Nick,
Thanks for replying, I'm trying to use an ODBC driver
(that works for MS-Access) to get at data files (on a Unix Server) via middleware (Transoft U/SQL). All I know is that
it works with MS-Access. I am able to use the Microsoft ODBC driver with Alpha Five to get at MS-Access tables, this
        seems to work fine.

          Stan,
          Thanks for your reply.
I did not create a Transoft.ini, as I would not know what
to include there. All I did was use an existing ODBC driver
(one that works just fine with MS-Access). I get connected
to the the data source with Alpha Five, select a file from
the data dictionary, and then get my 37000 error message.

            Stan,
Attached is a log file via ODBC tracing, and yes I do
            have the User DSN established.
            Thanks

              RE: ODBC

              Understanding the ODBC .INI files
Alpha Five uses special .INI files to configure each ODBC data source. The .INI file is named:
              ODBC Data Source Name.INI
and is stored in the \windows directory.
You can edit this .INI file to change the way in which Alpha Five functions are mapped to the
specific SQL syntax supported by the ODBC driver you are using.
Alpha Five comes with three template ODBC .INI files. These are oracle.ini (for accessing Oracle
databases), mssqlsrv.ini (for accessing Microsoft SQL Server databases), and access.ini (for
accessing Microsoft Access databases- the default template .INI file - it is hard coded into Alpha
Five). These template ODBC .INI files are in the same directory as the Alpha5.exe program file.
When a new link table is created, Alpha Five determines which template ODBC .INI file to use
and then creates a new .INI file with the name of the ODBC data source.
You can configure Alpha Five to work with any ODBC data source by editing the appropriate .INI
file and ensuring that the appropriate SQL syntax is used in the .INI file. Of course, the degree to
which Alpha Five functionality is supported is dependent on the specifics of the particular ODBC
              driver. See ODBC Limitations.
              There can be only one.

                Stan,
Thanks. Found the MOST.udd.INI file, (was looking for just
MOST.ini) in the Windows directory, overwrote the .INI with
the MS SQL driver, and voila it works.
Thanks again for putting up with me.

                  Barry:

I don't have an answer for you, but I believe the tables (files) on your Unix system are COBOL indexed files.

We also use the Transoft U/SQL product, but I have not used it with A5.

                  Good Luck!
