Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Index not updating browse!

I have a database setup on a main computer on a network. I have other A5 programs that copy the .dbf file from that main computer and use it to present information to the user. Once the .dbf file is copied over, the application reindexes the browse to show the information in the proper order; which it does. However, the main database contains all the current information, but the application isn't showing all the information that should be visible. It is only showing some of the information. Is there some updating command I must be using to tell the other A5 applications to show all the information in the copied .dbf file? Am I forgetting to copy over an additional file which may affect the way the information is presented?

    Nathan,

I can't answer the questions specifically but perhaps this will provide some direction. If you've been doing this for awhile and it's been working (which it sounds like), then look for something that's changed; code, field rules, indexes, etc. Have you tried rebuilding the indexes?

If you've done all this and still no go, please provide more information about how things are set up so others can get a feel for what you're doing.

Ken's on the right track. If you are only copying the .dbf then your index is out of date. (The index file for the table in question doesn't know the new records are there)

You need to copy this as well, the .cdx file. To verify that this is the problem, before copying the .cdx file, change the index to record number order and look at the browse.
      There can be only one.

When I go to the browse in record number order, what will indicate that I need to copy the .cdx file? Not seeing the information?

          RE: Index not updating browse!

If you look at the table in record number order your view of the table is not being affected by the existing CDX (index) file for that table. You should see all the records you are expecting, though not in sorted order.

If you then select an index with which to view the records, and also see that some records have 'disappeared' it's likely due to the index file being out of date. In this instance reindexing the table should solve the problem.

          Background:

          1) when you define and build an index for a table alpha five will keep it current for you automatically. The index lists are stored in the CDX file for the table.

          2) if you then copy that DBF table somewhere else, but do not copy the companion CDX file the index lists are left behind.

          3) if the destination for the table copy is in a folder that has a former CDX file from an earlier iteration of the table, Alpha Five will happily use it without realizing that it's out of date.

          Does this help?

            Tom:
I have copied over the .cdx files as well. Unfortunately, this copying process is causing the previous indexes not to show at all; the index tables are empty after the copy is done.
Is that normal? Or Am I doing something wrong on the copy?

Mr. White, I think you've got a propblem!

It sounds like you're trying a hodge podge of things to get it to work. When you say you have other A5 programs, I'm taking that to mean that you wrote code to copy the .dbf files to the other network computers. Is this the first time you ran the code or has it been working and now is not responding?

It would help to know how you set this up. Please be specific. General comments and questions get general answers. Consider going back to the basics. Are you sure you have your app set up properly to run on a network and nothing has occured to change the settings or the code? This may sound like a corny suggestion, but I think it was Vince Lombardi who told his veteran players, "Gentlemen, this is a football"!

                RE: Index not updating browse!

Nathan, the whole idea of copying tables and their indexes makes me uncomfortable, and should be approached with care.

In many networked situations you would never do this. Instead, each workstation would log on to the same tables over the network. shared access to a common set of tables is often the entire point of putting a database on a local area network.

Assuming you want to work with a local copy of a remote table, you must copy the DBF, FPT, and CDX files from the remote table. The DBF is your data table. the FPT is for memo field text. If you have no memo fields in your table structure you won't have an FPT file so don't worry about it. The CDX is the collection of indexes defined for the table at the remote location.

When all are copied to a new local folder you should be able to open that copy of the table with Alpha Five on the local work station and the indexes defined on the remote station will be available to you, since they now reside in the same folder as your DBF. Be careful when copying not to split these files among several different folders. They should all reside in the same folder.

This approach will overwrite the contents of any local files with the same names... which, after all, is what copying a file on top of another file always does, isn't it?

If instead of this you are adding or appending tables to existing tables a completely different set of procedures would be used. This would never be referred to as a file copy.
