Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Find Record With Xbasic

    This should be simple but I cannot seem to find the right combination of code. If I have an index called GAMEDATE, how do I FIND a game number (field name - GAMENUM) using a variable called CURGAME in xbasic? The form is called SCHDLINKMS

    Thanks

    RE: Find Record With Xbasic

    Alpha Five Xbasic Reference Manual 159
    "tbl>.fetch_find()
    Syntax:
    Record Number = "Tbl>.fetch_find( Matching Expression)
    Description:
    Fetches the first record in the table referenced by with a primary index
    key equal to the Matching Expression parameter. The Matching Expression and
    the tables primary index key must have the same data type. Alpha Five will
    automatically pad the Matching Expression with trailing blanks if necessary so
    that the length of Matching Expression matches the index key length.
    If the tables primary index is record number order, then Matching Expression is
    the record number that you want to find.
    If .fetch_find() is successful, the found record is retrieved and its Record
    Number is returned. If no exact match is found, a negative number
    corresponding to the record number of the closest matching record is returned.
    Example:
    'This script is on a button on a form for a set in which the
    inv_item table
    'is a child table.
    'The script opens the product table. It then finds the record that
    matches
    'product_id in the inv_item table, and assigns the value from the
    qty_stock
    'field in product to the on_hand variable
    '------------------------------------------------------------------
    tbl_product = table.open("c:dataproduct.dbf")
    indx_1 = tbl_product.index_primary_put("id_index")
    rec = tbl_product.fetch_find(inv_item->product_id)
    IF rec > 0 THEN
    on_hand = tbl_product.qty_stock
    END IF
    tbl_product.close()
    'This script opens a table and finds record 100
    '---------------------------------------------------
    tbl = table.open("d:dataproduct.dbf")
    'Select record number order
    indx_1 = tbl.index_primary_put()
    rec = tbl.fetch_find(100)
    See Also:
    "tbl>.fetch_goto()

    Yours should be:
    yourtablepointer=table.open("pathtoyourtablle")
    rec = yourtablepointer.fetch_find(curgame)
    assuming the gamedate index is chosen. (You don't mention your table name)
    There can be only one.

      I found this in the manual but had a hard time understanding. One question I have is where does REC come from? You can use TBL for the table in use.

      Thanks

        RE: Find Record With Xbasic

        If .fetch_find() is successful, the found record is retrieved and its Record
        Number is returned( rec = .

        If no exact match is found, a negative number
        corresponding to the record number of the closest matching record is returned.

        So using this construction you would use the returned value of "rec" to determine if your "find" was successful and proceed accordingly.
        There can be only one.

          RE: Find Record With Xbasic

          I use these 2 methods to find records with xbasic

          topparent.index_set()
          topparent.find()

          parentform.index_set("sheetno")
          topparent.find()

            If the form is based on a table and not a set, then define curgame as a session level varible on your form design and place a field on your form for that variable, then put the following script in the OnDepart event of that field:

            dim shared curgame as c 'picks up the variable for use in script
            dim pTbl as p 'get a pointer for the table
            dim pIndx as p 'get a pointer for the index
            dim recno as n 'to hold the record number
            if alltrim(curgame)="" 'if a blank is entered, quit
            end
            end if
            pTbl=table.current() 'assumes this is not a set
            pIndx=pTbl.index_primary_put("curgame") 'set the index to search
            recno=pTbl.fetch_find(curgame) 'go find a match
            if recno
