Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Application Installation Question

Are there any special consideration when installing an application on a laptop computer, then synchronizing files with an office. The office has a small network, three computers on it, but only one computer will be using the application.

Should I install on the two using computers, one in the office and the laptop, or install on the office network and laptop.

Either way, if the office and notebook user enter information on the same client, how do the files get synchronized? This installation is for a rural home care provider, and the notebook might not get back to the office for file synchronization for days.

    Thanks

    RE: Application Installation Question

As I consider this further - do you really have a network it computers are not connected.

The real questions is: how does one synchronize files - or more specifically, individual records within a file?

I have maybe 20 tables in the application. Would I need to do an Update Append Operation for each table?

Is there an easy/quick way to do this? Particularly if I needed to change field rules to eliminate autoincrement, then re-apply it.

    Thanks

      RE: Application Installation Question

      Thomas,
Without any understanding of your application and the twenty tables contained in it, I'll venture a general opinion. Yes you would have to do appends between each "away" table to each "home" table if the table is capable of being changed.

I'm not nuts about the auto increment field rule ( I use xbasic for that ), but if you are using them I'd do something like this:

      1) Add a field to each table (location code ) and make sure that every record added to every table has a "home" or "away" in that field.
      2) Have a field rule on each table that demands that the combination of location code and auto increment field is unique.
      3) When you create the appends or scripts, append unique only. The unique only criteria would be a combination of the location code and the auto increment field.

If I were doing this, I would probably append from "away" to "home" only and then copy all the "synched" tables back to the away application. You'll have to think carefully about changes and deletions also. For instance if you allow both sides to change the same record, who is the boss here?

What it really demands is a very careful look at the app and all the possibilities, but in general, I belive appends or scripts ( I would choose scripts ) would be the mechanism used for synching.

        RE: Application Installation Question

        Thanks John,

I like the "Home" and "Away" designations. Guess I better get busy designing scripts.

So the network really isn't and wouldn't be any help here.

Do autoincrement fields fix themselves after an append, if there are duplicates?

          Thomas

My clients have a back up and restore facility button built in to their applications. This zips up their data .cdx, .dbf, and .fpt files to a floppy and can then be restored to either machine. Takes seconds.

I designed my scripts with help from the articles at Peter Wayne's Leanalpha site.

I'm off to LearningAlpha. Is it a straight copy and restore - in which case what if each computer has added new information to the same record? - or is it an append?

I'll go look. Do you have the name of the aricle handy?

              RE: Application Installation Question

I'll be off to learning Alpha in a minute. I do recall an article there which involved a call to another program to zip and backup. Is that the article? It give three or four backup programs that are required. Or are you using a bat file and dos copy commands?

              Thanks

                There are several articles.

                May 10 99 copy records ..........
                Nov 15 99 Another approach ........

But I am told that V5 will do this for you

The last article you mentioned, back in 1999 by Jeff Moses looks good to me as long as DOS is an option. Hopefully, A5V5 will be out before we lose DOS.

                  Thanks - Another Problem solved.
