Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    lookup tables

    hello to all,
Ive great problems with creating a simple data entry form
    for typing german addresses.
The main problem is the following: I use a lookup table for zip-codes and towns. When I enter a zip-code in the zip-code-field, the lookup table should pop-up, starting with the zip code I just typed in. But this seems not possible. Obviously Ive only the possibility to get a pop-up on entrance (before typing the zip-code) or use the mouse to open the table (so the typist has to leave one hand from the keyboard, which is not good for fast-typing).
The lookup-table must pop-up because in germany we sometimes have one zipcode for several towns and the typist has to choose the right town from the lookup-table.
    Can anyone help me ?

There are several articles there on 'lookups'. Do a search for them. You will find articles which show you how to build intelligent (dynamic) lookups. Perhaps one will help you with the specific situation you face.

      Michaela,

I understand you to say that the popup should occur as soon as typing the zip code so that you can choose the town from a list that only matches the zip code. I don't think this will work with a lookup unless you use an expression. I'm thinking the expression may have to be upon entering the town field.

I don't have time to check this out but if this is what you need, try an expression based upon entering the town field to lookup the zip code field.

      Hope this helps.

        One small additional point:

To expand a lookup the typist can use the keystroke shortcut
        alt-down_arrow
which-since I am a fast typist-I always prefer to the mouse.

Bill, once in a drop down field I press the up or down arrow key which scrolls me up or down. Once the selection is there, I press the tab or enter key and adios, to the next one.

Yes Ken, but the alt-downarrow shortcut is what expands the dropdown in the first place. Of course, once it is opened up you use up and down to navigate within it.

IN FIELD RULES YOU MIGHT TRY THE LOOKUPFIELD RULE AND FORCE CLOSEST MATCH.

                Michalea:

Why don't you use the lookup as it is designed. I.E. in field rules have the TOWN NAME the field from which the lookup pops up. When this occurs the typist presses 'F' and then starts typing the name of the town. The highlight will move directly to or near the desired town. If need be the typist can use the down/up-arrow keys to move the highlight to the proper town and press the [enter] key. No need for a mouse here.

That's place the 'pop' on the town field, index it to Name of town, and instruct it to fill in the Zip code field. Your popup lookup needs only the town and zip code columns.

                    Hi Bill,

My modem took a hike via a lightening strike and just got a new one up and running. Thanks for explaning how the Alt part works. One can either look at all the choices via the Alt arrow keys or just one at a time with the arrow key. Only in A5.
