Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    corupt arena

Whenever I do an append operation I get the message "corupt arena" and not all of the records get appended. I thought it might be the transaction table but I tried different tables and got the same message. Can anyone tell me what this is all about?

I've never seen that message before... Perhaps others have.

Are the records that did not get appended appearing in the 'violated.dbf'? If so, what are the violations?

Would you care to post a sample so someone (I) can test it out?

I sure didn't remember what it was but I did remember seeing a posting regarding this odd error message so I searched and found this. Perhaps I'll remember now!

Subject: corrupt arena error on copy
      Author: selwyn rabins
      Date: 07-01-1999 20:33
      File:

it means that a5 has tried to copy a record that is corrupt.

you should try to copy the table in smaller chuncks.

i described to you via email how to do this.

in case you fogot, when you are asked what records to copy, say that you want to copy a range. sepecfiy an expression and enter something like this (to copy 1 to 100)

      between(recno(),1,100)

        Jerry:

I recently encountered this problem. My solution:
1 - back up the application directory.
2 - export the table in question as an asc file.
3 - empty the corrupt table.
4 - import the asc file in to the now empty table.
5 - compare record counts for the newly imported data and the previously backed up table.

if counts are exact you have no problem. if counts are defferent you have lost some records.

        i hope this helps.

Problem with this is that there are memo fields that will be lost.

I may have been lucky, but I exported and imported a memo field with this process.

the problem may be an index in the file.

if you are not willing to try the import export process.

look at the index definitions for the file record them on paper. then delete the "cdx" file and recreate the indicies.

                Bob:

This can be done without leaving the index builder ... Edit/Select the index definitions then Ctrl-X to remove them. Click on the lightning bolt to rebuild/remove the indexes. This has the effect of physically removing the cdx file from the drive. Then Ctrl-V to repaste the original definitions and rebuild.

thanks for the information. I was not aware of the Ctrl-x and ctlr-v features. they are a very nice short cut.
