Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    popup on entrance

    Hi Phorum,

I have tried all of the suggestions sent in to solve this problem of getting a lookup table to popup automatically when the first field is entered (3 other subsequent fields are mapped to it). So far, the closest thing is that one record appears instead of a browse (so to speak) of all records in the lookup table.

Does anyone else have a suggestion? Unfortunately I convinced my customer that he would be better off in A5 than he is in A4; however, this snag makes his data entry much more difficult in A5.

    Thank you for reading,

    RE: popup on entrance

I think I misunderstood what you wanted to do in your prior posting. I see now, I think.

You could create your own lookup table form that pops up conditionally based on the contents of the field which you wish to activate it. I do this quite often..I rarely use the builtin table lookup function..just because I like to do other things like position the window, provide my own buttons, etc. It isn't terribly difficult to accomplish, but it will take a bit of XBasic. I'd help you with that if you run into a snag.

Basically, what I'd suggest is create a form, based on the lookup table, to use as a popup lookup form. Determine what criteria you wish to activate the popup. Code the popup form to return the information selected, if desired, or add new data to the popup form. By creating this yourself, you will be able to have more explicit control of the form itself, menus associated with it, size the form and, among many other things, position the form exactly where you want it, even relative to the underlying form if you desire. You can also use the OnKey event to do some pretty slick tricks, like, for example, on key {ENTER}, cause the selected data to be copied back into the parent form and close the popup form, on key {ESC}, cancel the lookup operation entirely and on key {CTRL-ENTER}, add a new record, even if the form is set to readonly = .T. You can place the popup form in readonly mode to prevent accidental editing until an edit button or add new record button is pressed..and you can confine editing capabilities to the current browse row, if applicable and if desired. The code for all of this is not exactly intuitive, but you'll find all the help you need right here. In my opinion, flexibility such as this is what sets Alpha5 apart from the rest.

Probably more than you needed to hear.

      RE: popup on entrance

      Hi Tom,

Heh heh, you are right, it is more than I wanted to hear. I am not proficient enough in xbasic to write all of that code or understand what you said. Here is the story ....... I have a set of 1 to many for entering PO's. The parent is ord_po, the child of the set is products. Other child tables to ord_po are clients, ship_to and supplier. I am trying to have a popup on entrance for the name in clients, ship_to and supplier, and of course, products. I haven't tried clients, ship_to or products. I am stuck on the 1st entry of supplier (sup_nam), ST_address, city, state, and zip are mapped onto it . This is so easy to do in A4, I never realized it is so tough in A5.

Ya think we need A6 or A7?

      Thank you for reading,
      Edward Schulz

        Heh..I hear that.

I'd still stick with the custom lookup table..I just prefer it much more. But suit yourself, I know you could find the help to develop it if you cared to take it on.

            RE: popup on entrance

Edward, could you explain the situation in more detail or attach a zip file with a sample of what you are trying to do? I use "popup on entrance" fairly often and don't see why it is any more difficult than with A4.

Also, it doesn't really matter but you don't need to click the "IF someone posts...e-mail..." box more than once per thread. I used to do that too but then discovered (because I forgot to do it) that once you click it for one response, you will be notified of all subsequent responses to that thread.

              Hi Cal & Tom,

I deleted some of the records to make this smaller, hope it goes okay this time. For Cal, iam trying to get supplier's name, adddress, city, state and zip in a drop down list that popsup automatically when supplier's name is entered, so far I can get 1 name to drop in, but not a list to select from. The same scenario will occur on customer name, ship to name, and stocknum.
