Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    I believe the command you're looking for is

    deltree (forward slash)s

    The S option is used to delete sub directories.

      Martin:
      deltree will delete the entire folder
      if you only want to delete files in a filder
      try
      del c:foldername*.*

      there are backslashes after the c: and between foldername and the first astrick

        Guys:

        An advantage [or disadvantage] of deltree is that it will delete hidden files as well.

          RE: dos batch flags question

          charlie - the question is how to run it automatically. Like I have end of day routines, called by my alpha program, to copy (read "|" as the backslash)

          copy "d:|input|plano|*.dbf" "d:|input|planodaily" |y
          copy "d:|input|plano|*.fpt" "d:|input|planodaily" |y

          the "|y flag" answers the question 'are you sure, or whatever' in advance

          but with del, to empty the folders, I can't get any flags to work, so I can't get it to work in an unattended mode.

            Martin:
            I use these copy routines to copy downloaded payroll files to a iomega zip 250 disk and also to a floppy disk in drive A.
            It is all put on to one button

            First I set my variables for the paths and file names.
            I use a table called ZZJOBSITES
            the line close to the end -file copy is what actually does the copy.

            var->vardrive = ZZJOBSITES->drive
            var->varpath = ZZJOBSITES->path
            var->varpayweek = ZZJOBSITES->payweek
            var->varpayweek1 = dtoc(ZZJOBSITES->payweek)
            var->varpayweekalpha = substr(varpayweek1,1,2)+substr(varpayweek1,4,2)+substr(varpayweek1,9,2)

            var->varcreate = var->vardrive + trim(var->varpath)
            var->varcreate2 = var->vardrive + trim(var->varpath)+VAR->VARSLASH+trim(var->varpayweekalpha)

            filename = var->varcreate
            filename2 = var->varcreate2

            var->path= ""
            var->path2=""
            var->path="C:afield"+var->slash
            var->path2=var->filename2+var->slash

            var->filenameA=path+"A*.asc"
            var->filenameB=path+"B*.asc"
            var->filenameC=path+"C*.asc"
            var->filenameD=path+"D*.asc"

            resultA = file.exists(filenameA)
            IF resultA = .T.
            filesA = filefind.first(filenameA)
            WHILE .not. filesA.eof()
            index_nameA=filesA.name()var-ile2nameA=path2+trim
            (substr((index_nameA),11,15))
            file.copy(index_nameA,file2nameA)
            filesA.next()

                Charlie - thank's
                basically - I get the idea - take a new approach!!

                I'm going to study the code and try implementing it with my app.

                the scenario is that one of the Dallas offices operators will be responsible to be sure the Home Office gets a copy of all Dallas and Austin remote sites dbf's and fpt's.

                PCAnywhere automatically calls all the remote offices at night and gets the data to her Dallas computer, each in its own folder. The next morning, if any of the downloads failed, she will have to manually redial and get the data - and then send it to Houston - the home office.

                What I was looking for was a timed running (Windows scheduler) of a dos batch file to empty the local folders (Austin, Plano, Peavy, etc.) so she could immediately tell if the download failed by checking the number of files in each folder.

                It will be good for me to learn the directory commands.

                  At last this newbie can help someone on the A5 board.

                  The Flag is "Y" and the syntax is...

                  A:>deltree /Y a:haha
                  Deleting a:haha...
