Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    tabbed forms & required fields

Good Afternoon. I have a tabbed form with 5 tabs and approximately 30 fields per tab. Of the 30 fields, 10-15 are required (set in field rules). While entering data on the first tab, I get an error message for required fields on the following tabs. When this happens, I cannot move to the next tab to complete it. I end up having to lose the current record in order to get out. I removed the field rules but it has created a MAJOR problem in data entry. Please help. Thanks.

RE: tabbed forms & required fields

I was able to duplicate your problem. There are at least two approaches that may work. Both involve eliminating setting "required" in field rules.

One way is to put a script on the CanSave event for the form that checks if every field that is required has a value entered. If not, pop up a message and use cancel() to prevent saving until all required field are filled.

The second way checks each field as it is being entered. A scxript segment is below.

if parentform.mode_get() = "VIEW" ' no point in checking if in view mode
    end if
    a = alltrim(this:this.value)
    if a =""
    ui_msg_box("Required","This is a required value",UI_ATTENTION_SYMBOL)
    end if

The only weirdness I noticed with this method is that it fires twice if you leave the field by tabbing to the next tab. I prefer the first method, but the second may be preferable if you need the values entered in any sequence.

RE: tabbed forms & required fields

Thanks. I'm not sure I know how to do it. I'm really new to Alpha. Can you walk me through it?

RE: tabbed forms & required fields

        look at

for a discussion of how to avoid this problem.

RE: tabbed forms & required fields

i have exactly the same problem and it seems my working knowledge of A5 is same as yours and have a problem with scripts.

i wonder why they did not make it in such a way that the required field rules are fired only when attempting to save the record and meantime can move from tab to tab at leisure.

if you manage to figure it out, would appreciate if could email the solution to me as i visit this board only occassionally.

RE: tabbed forms & required fields

The behavior you request has been announced for version 5.

RE: tabbed forms & required fields

I haven't tried this but it might work. Create a form and place the fields with the field rules on it. Next, place the form on the tab. Just might work. I did this for another issue. Sort of a bit redundant as far as the use of a form is concerned, but it solved my problem.

              TYVM :) kenn

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

RE: tabbed forms & required fields

Thanks. I will try all of the options this afternoon and will let you which one works.
