Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Filter two fields

I am very new to Alpha 5 and have been struggling, with what seems to be an easy situation, for a couple of weeks. At this point I'm totally lost and I hope someone can help.

I have a parent table, Equipment_On_Job, with child table, Equipment_Return, linked one to many. The parent table contains the fields Job_Code, Equipment_Code, Customer_Code and Units. The cild table has the fields Job_Code, Equipment_Code and Units_Received.

When working with the Equipment_Return form, I need to filter the Equipment_On_Job table first for the correct Job_Code second by Equipment_Code and then subtract the Units_Received from Units corresponding to the correct Job_Code and Equipment_Code in The Equipment_On_Job table.

I have tried this using indexes and tried to write a script to handle the process and tried using the two in conjunction. Everything I have tried either subtracts from the wrong Job_Code, the wrong Equipment_Code or not at all. As I said I am very new to this. Maybe someone can help me with some code and/or point me in the right direction. I don't seem to be able to find the answer in the 742 pages of documentation.

Maybe I'm over-thinking this whole thing. I feel like I'm living the song by Guns and Roses - "Welcome To The Jungle".

Have you tried a field rule for Units_Received on the child table that posts to the parent table?

      RE: Filter two fields

I have tried various field rules. The result ends up subtracting from the wrong Job_Code or wrong Equipment_Code. It is possible I didn't do it right... but then what is the possibility of a newbie doing that? J/K

Could you suggest how the field rules would be written?

        Michael,

What is it you're trying to accomplish? Are you trying to monitor what equiupment goes to a specific job and what equipment is returned and when with the possibility that not all the equipment is returned at the same time?

If this is the case, could you set up a separate field (logical)on the child table called Rtnd and then run a query to show returned or unreturned equipment?

        Just a thought,

The company biulds the equipment then leases it to contractors. The databsae is setup to track the equipment from warehouse to job to a return pool, where it can be written off if damaged beyond repair, and back into the warehouse. The only part of that entire equation I'm messed up on is where the equipment moves from the job to the return pool. In order for that to work correctly it needs to find the right job then the right equipment and subtract that from the job and place it in the return pool.

Equipment that does not get returned is not a problem. The customer invoicing shows all customers with equipment and bills each customer accordingly. Think of it as if it were a rental yard with many different pieces of equipment that it leases out to many different customers. Then think of how you would keep track of your inventory on hand, inventory in customers possesion, inventory returned and inventory written off due to wear or damage or sent back into inventory (on hand) in the warehouse.

I don't know if that helps or not.

            Michael,

To keep it simple try basing a new form on the EquipmentOnJob table.

Use an embedded browse to display the records.

Add a button to the form. In the button's onPush event write a script which

            1) confirms user wants to 'return' one unit of the current equipment
            2) stores key values in memory variables (job number, equipment item number etc.)
            3) opens the returns table, sets an index so you can fetch_find the desired item
            4) if the find fails, you know you have 'enter' a new returns record, so do it
            5) if the find succeeds you increment the units_received field
            6) then you close the returns table
            7) then you decrement unitsonhand in the equipmentOnJob table

The script could be set up to prompt the user for a specific number of units to be returned, so you wouldn't have to necessarily do it one at a time...

Hope this helps with your thinking and planning.
