Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Slow Report

I have been using a report based on a set for some time now. Until yesterday it generated a print preview of ~ 8 pages in about 15 seconds.
There are about 40 memo fields and about the same number of calculated fields.
I simply added 6 new memo fields and associated calculated fields. They are essentially the same type and size as the existing fields... the report preview now takes 5 minutes!
Obviously I have either exceeded some limit in V4.5 or have made some fundamental error.
The first 3 pages generate as fast as before it is on the 4th page that the slowdown occurs. This is the page containing the RTF that acts as a container for the memo fields.
I tried performing a COMPACT. I tried removing all new memo fields from the RTF... did not help.
    Any suggestions??

    RE: Slow Report

David, it certainly sounds as though your calculated fields are slowing things down. That's where I'd look first to see if there might be ways to simplify things. If you've added new tables to your set, the report may be spending time building, sorting or filtering indexes to meet your specifications...

      RE: Slow Report

Thanks for the suggestion Tom. I removed all calc fields from the table containing the memo fields & compacted... still runs slow.

I have not added anytables or indexes; only new memo fields and associated calc fields in report...
Strange thing is that an old report, that does not contain any of the new memo fields or calc fields, now runs slowly. The problem must be related to the child table containing the new memo fields (about 100 of them).
      Any ideas?

        RE: Slow Report

David, sorry, no. It's hard for me to imagine so many memo fields. Must be an interesting app. (Which reminds me of an ancient Chinese curse... "May you live in interesting times.")

          RE: Slow Report

Interesting times indeed Tom! The problem is associated with the table containing the memo fields, not the reports associated with the table or sets containing the table. I finally deleted all the new memo fields, performed a compact and added them back... Lo, the report runs at a decent speed... can't figure why...
I will ponder the imponderable, dipping by small civilized foot in the deep cool waters of chaos, and ripple, for an instant, the smooth surface of time.
          Best wishes
