Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: Drop Down List Box

Ray it sounds as though you expect the controls you put on the form to be unbound that's not how Alpha Five works there is no such thing as a form separate from its underlying table or set when you open the form, you open the underlying table or set upon which it is based the controls are automatically bound to the fields in this instance of the set or table your listbox is displaying the current (active) records in the linked child table it will not display all records in the child table because the form is based on a set and the current composite record in the set includes one parent record and only its linked child table records

        RE: Drop Down List Box

Ray, what's the list to be used for?

Check the ui_get_list_array() function. The array could be loaded when the form is opened, and then you could display the list using this function...

Alternatively, you might add another instance of the child table to your set, and define a link key which links each parent record to all child table records...

          RE: Drop Down List Box

As per Tom's suggestion you can put the following linking expression on both the parent and child side of the set:

          "X"

That will link every child to every parent.

            RE: Drop Down List Box

            Hi Tom

The List will be used for looking up several models and I
tried to find info on the ui_get_list_array() function and
I can't find any reference to try this as far as adding another instance of the child table to my set, and define a link key which links each parent record to all child table records... I defined a one to many link and can't get it to work.

Any help please be as thorough as possible I am very new to A5

            Thank You

                RE: Drop Down List Box

                Ray,

Sounds to me like you're intending the drop down list box to display the models which are actually stored in a field of the table 2. If so, I'm sure this will not work. You need to define a lookup list, either a simple list or via a kookup table. Either of those will do what you want. Go to the field rules of the table and when you have the field in view that you want the lookup list to display, click the lookup tab.

In other words, if you have a field called 'model' in table 2, right click on table 2, and then click field rules. Click the down arrow to get to the 'model' field and then click the loopup tab. Follow the 'yellow brick road' at that point. This feature works really well.

I grabbed this from memory (Yeah, I know that can be dangerous) but it's close.

                    RE: Drop Down List Box

The function is explained in the Xbasic Reference Manual. Check the index to the Manual to find what page it's on.

The function displays a list, created from an array which you populate in advance. The Function prompts the user for a selection and returns the choice picked off the list, or a null string if nothing is selected.

If you are trying to assist the end user with data entry, by presenting a list from which they 'must' pick, I recommend you use a table lookup field rule instead. It will be much easier for you to implement.

later on, when you get more familiar with alpha five you can come back and build a custom lookup form or listbox if you wish.

                      Ray,

I agree with Tom. There have been times when a solution was offered and I did not fully grasp it due to my inexperience with A5. Months later, when I want to do the same thing, I search the board and find a thread on the subject. Upon reading the thread, I discover it's a post I made earlier and upon reading the suggestions, I find them easier to understand. (They actually work this time)

A5 has numerous ways to do things and I've found that sticking with the easier stuff lowers my frustration level. And, I have more time to work a project towards completion.
