Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    problem with labels

Trying to print labels (avery 5160 3 across 10 down)
can get it to print across just fine but when I try to adjust the height (need to move the top gutter or margin down about 1/2 inch) I keep getting errors about not valid page layout or margin.
Does anyone have templetes for standard label layouts.
When I go to desing labels I have no standard layouts availabe.

    RE: problem with labels

Charlie the standard labels that ship with Alpha Five are stored in the a_shared.* series of files... They should be in your EXE (Program) folder.

      RE: problem with labels

Like Charlie I have no standard labels listed when I try to create a new label. If I open the a_shared.dbf file I see all the labels listed but they do not appear in the genie? Do you have to do something to import them into the list?

        RE: problem with labels

There are three files that Alpha Five needs to use standard labels

        a_shared.dbf
        a_shared.cdx
        a_shared.fpt

For the development version of Alpha Five I think these need to be in the local program directory for alpha five. This is the folder where alpha five lives, not where your database files live.

For the runtime versioni of Alpha Five they need to located in a folder that Alpha Five can see. i.e. a shared folder on the server, or in the local runtime folder.

          Thanks Tom

All three files are in the main program file but still do not appear in the genie.

Are you using the development version or the runtime version? Runtime will not permit you to design label layouts, is why I ask... -- tom

              a_shared.cdx 3kb
              a_shared.dbf 9kb
              a_shared.fpt 3kb
              a_shared.ddd 1kb
              a_shared.ddm 1kb
              a_shared.ddx 3kb

This is a complete list of the a_shared series in my alpha five program directory, along with their respective file sizes as reported by windows explorere.

                Tom
I have all the same files the only exception is a_shared.fpt is 13 kb. I am using 4.5 build 266 and the files are in the directory c-program files- a5v4
I have attached a sample file that shows what lists when you create a label and then check the size. The only label that appears is one that I created.

                  RE: problem with labels

You're right the FPT file is 13kb. My typo. Sorry.

I suggest you check to see what your printer setup is in Alpha Five.
(From A5 Control Panel, Click File, the Print Setup. Verify that the specified printer is what you were expecting, configure it for letter sized and portrait mode.)

It may be that only one of the standard formats will 'fit' in your current setup. Otherwise I'm at a loss to explain what you are seeing.

Thanks for the help Tom I checked the printer and setup everything is ok. I'll keep checking and see if we get a response from anyone else.

                    Thanks again

                      Rick:
I just opened windows explorer and went to the directory where alpha was installed.(c:program filesA5v4) and copied all the A_shared files to the directory where my application is.
Then I started up my application
                      Went to control panel
Selected label new and use the genie
and all the standard templete were there.
