Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Why not a monthly bulletin from Alpha Software ?

May I suggest that Alpha could publish a monthly bulletin on their Web site on differents topics. only one topic per month, but explained in details with screens etc. Something similar to "Learning Alpha", but published by the program designers.

    For instance:

-How to install Alpha on a Network and be efficient.

-How to use posting, with an example.

-How to design a dialog box

-How to design a multi-button to search for names in a table.

Or it could also be a step by step examples for designing a complete application, but published on a monthly basis.

And many many other subjects that could be proposed by the users.

Some of the "Learning Alpha" articles could be used as reference or as starting point for a more exhaustive article on the same subject.

Each bulletin could have reference to the User Guide, or XBasic book, and may be to a specific example such as the inventory sample provided with the program.

This board could be a complement to those articles.

After a couple of years that will consists of a very valuable reference site for designers.

This is just a thought or ... a dream!

Right on --- this might be a way for the company to simulate all of the good examples and hand-holding tutoring offered in the A4 Manual which was EXCELLENT for a non-programmer - newbie.

          JP,

I discussed with Richard Rabins the tip of the week (ala a ZDNET tip) e-mail, newsletter etc back a number of months ago. I'm not sure of the final form, but I think something along the lines of what you suggest is in the works.

RE: Why not a monthly bulletin from Alpha Software

The tips site is making progress. I hope it will be on-line within the next couple weeks but no promises. There are still a couple minor items to get ironed out.

It won't be as comprehensive as JPs suggestion but it will add a new dimension to the help available on the Alpha site. (It will be located on Alpha's home website rather than this message board but one of the details we are working on is to add a link here.)

HINT: Start thinking about tips, tricks, or techniques that you can submit. We will need a short 'abstract' (1-3 sentences) and a detail section not to exceed 3000 characters.

                Useful tips would include:
                - Ideas that apply to fairly common tasks, such as queries.
                - Tips used for common types of applications, such as inventory control.
                - Procedures that would be considered good practice, such as using a separate table for menus.
                - Simple scripts that simplify common operations, or make them more useful.

                Tips to avoid:
                - Topics already available in either the Help or Readme files (although we will consider tips that might be very hard to find in Help, or tips which expand on Help topics).
                - Long scripts (which would be more appropriate in the Code Archive) or complicated procedures.
                - Topics with limited applicability, such as solutions to specific problems in unique applications.

RE: Why not a monthly bulletin from Alpha Software

How about a query to mark duplicates. The operation for Mark Duplicates only marks 1/2. Example:

                      1/1/01 Pancakes Cafe1
                      1/1/01 Pancakes Cafe2

Assuming the duplicate field criteria is the date and food item, the mark duplicate operation will only mark one of the above items. Thus the report, printing marked records, will not show the true story, only 1/2 of it. The query should mark BOTH records.
