Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    another errant firing synapse

    hi once again:

    dang, the straight forward ones are chasin' me again. i need to do a custom append from one table to the other. if the master table has a record dated past the date and time of a record being uploaded i don't need to append it. i'm just trying to do a simple filter and i get and invalid date constant error.

    master.fetch_last()
    archive_date=master.date
    time_stamp=toseconds(master.time)

    query.filter="var->archive_datearchive_date .AND. toseconds(tbl1.time)time_stamp 'same day but earlier record

    many thanks once again!!

    regards,

    ed

    RE: another errant firing synapse

    hi: just read my original post and it got clobbered somehow.

    this is the code, all variables are dim'ed ... so's my brain. i get an "invalid date constant at the line indicated. just can't figure out why. think that it's time for a wee dram of glenfiddich and a sleep, getting alot of white-out on the screen now correcting all the errors.

    master_test:

    tbl1=table.open("upload")

    tbl1.fetch_first()
    fleet_id=tbl1.fleet_id

    master=table.open("master") 'open the master records table
    query.filter="fleet_id=var->fleet_id" 'narrow the range to the individual truck
    query.order=""
    qry7=master.query_create()

    master.fetch_last()
    archive_date=master.date
    time_stamp=toseconds(master.time)

    query.filter="date>=archive_date" '***THIS IS THE LINE THAT GIVES THE ERROR
    query.order=""
    qry1=tbl1.query_create() 'the upload table is filtered to records at or past the last master date

    tbl1.fetch_first()
    while .not.tbl1.fetch_eof()
    if tbl1.date=var->archive_date .AND. toseconds(tbl1.time)time_stamp 'same day but earlier record
    goto skip_me
    'fill in the blanks

    master.enter_begin()
    master.date=tbl1.date
    master.time=tbl1.time
    master.fleet_id=tbl1.fleet_id
    master.employee_num=tbl1.employee_num
    master.route_num=tbl1.route_num
    master.material=tbl1.material
    master.event=tbl1.event
    master.gate=tbl1.gate
    master.rate=tbl1.rate
    master.speed=tbl1.speed
    master.distance=tbl1.distance
    master.enter_end()
    end if

    skip_me:

    tbl1.fetch_next()

    end while

    kindest regards,

    ed

        Ed
        As many people have pointed out on the board, it is dangerous to name a field "date". I had to learn the hard way when I got a similar error. A5 seems to think you really are trying to use the date() function and therefore generates an error. I would suggest changing the name of the date field to something else and give that a try.
