Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Trying to create a 'green bar' report with a twist

    Hello All,

Im am working with a set with two one to many links.
I have a client who wants a report printed out in the green bar format, where every other line item is shaded. This is no problem, but there is a twist. The client wants the green bar effect even if there are no records. They use the report to write on and want some sort of lines on the report to make it easier to write on. I can put a graphic (frame etc.) on the report to provide the line effect, but this reeks havoc with the report if there are records. If records exist, they push the graphics around and make the report a mess. Ive tried using a bitmap background but this doesnt work as the effect needs to carry through different report sections. Ive thought about creating a series of calc fields that lookup to the children records and either print the child record or a green bar. This doesnt sound like a great idea to me. Short of creating a dummy table and populating it with at least a set number of child records for each parent, (which I dont want to do very bad) does anyone have any ideas how to approach this? At first blush, this doesnt sound like it should be any big deal to do, but Id hate to tell you how many hours Ive spent bumping my head against the alpha wall !

    Thanks,
    Jim

If this is being sent to a local printer...

Get the spacing set up in the different sections of your report so there's consistent line spacing (i.e., something resembling 6 lpi, or whatever) within and between sections, and drop prelined paper with the appropriate spacing into the paper tray at print time.

      Jim,
I assume you mean if there is a parent record and no child records. Have you tried using a conditional object in the parent section of the report based on some kind of group count for that parent being zero. If the group count is not zero, the conditional object could be blank, and you might try shrinking the contents of the region band.If you try this, I know that you have to have things very close together to achieve the shrinking effect on the blank conditional object.

Jim did you look at the method that Selwyn developed for Green Bar Reports? It's simple, and very elegant(as are all of Selwyn's solutions).

It is in Peter Wayne's articles. I believe it is called "Fancy Report". If you can't find it, let me know as I think I still have it.

I had a similar situation with student attendance reports. Sometimes we get transfer students and have to add them. Rather than print a new report, I placed a series of blank lines in the footer. Not very elegant, but it may solve your problem.

Barry, I'm trying to create just a plain "green bar" report. Where can I find Wayne's article?
