Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Expected value

    This script is expecting a value. If I ' out the last 3 lines, the name prompt will appear. As soon as I add the 4th line, then the error message expected value appears.

    What is the expected value and what do I need to change to make this work?

    t = table.open("Acctitems")
    vstring = ui_get_text("Retrieve a Name","Enter a Name")
    vlen = len(vstring)
    query.filter = "left(acctitems->name,vlen) = vstring
    ndx = t.query_create()
    vrecords = ndx.records_get()

    Thanks much,

      Hey Stan,

      Got any lense cleaner for my glasses?

      Now it's telling me that the filter expression is not logical.

      Thanks,

        RE: Expected value

        Ken,

        You shouldn't need the "acctitems->" but it shouldn't hurt. You shouldn't need "var->vstring", but it couldn't hurt to try.

        Try the interactive tab on the code builder, past in one line at a time from your script, see what happens, i.e.,

        t = table.open("Acctitems")
        vstring = ui_get_text("Retrieve a Name","Enter a Name")

        Then type ? vstring

        vlen = len(vstring)

        ? vlen

        test = "left(acctitems->name,vlen) = vstring"

        ? test
        .........
        There can be only one.

          Stan,

          I may have a problem with the interactive window. When I click on Code, the word 'check' is greyed out. Does this have to be activated somehow? Also, the debugger states 'No Source Available'.

          Thanks,

            From Code tab of control panel:

            Select View
            Select Code Editor
            Select Interactive Tab

                Guess I was wrong. Following you directions, I pasted the code in the interactive tab, clicked on Code and everything is greyed out. The code check is not available.

                  RE: Expected value

                  YOu can't use code check in interactive mode. Paste in a line, position the cursor in that line, hit the enter key. This makes Alpha attempt to execute the statement.

                  If you get no error, the line is ok. If you want to see a result, use ?, as in

                  result = left(acctitems->name,vlen)

                  ? result

                  Alpha then displays the value returned.

                    RE: Expected value

                    My Code editor seems to be out of service. No matter what I try the code menu is greyed out (entire column). (The Script tab is OK)

                    Perhaps someone could try this in their code editor, substitute the table and field names and see what happens?

                    t = table.open("Acctitems")
                    vstring = ui_get_text("Retrieve a Name","Enter a Name")
                    vlen = len(vstring)
                    query.filter = "left(acctitems->name,vlen) = vstring
                    ndx = t.query_create()
                    vrecords = ndx.records_get()

                    records_get is not the name of an index, is it?

                    Thanks,

                          this might be a little clearer:

                          query.filter = "left(name,"+vlen+")=' "+vstring+" ' "

                          i separated the single and double quotes to make it
                          more obvious.

                            Hi Dr. Wayne,

                            I pasted your version as follows:

                            vstring = ui_get_text("Retrieve a Name","Enter a Name")
                            vlen = alltrim(str(len(vstring)))
                            query.filter = "left(name,"+vlen+")=' "+vstring+" ' "
                            query.options=""
                            query.order=""
                            ndx = t.query_create()
                            vrecords = ndx.records_get()

                            This time there are no errors but there are also no results. The sought after name does not come into view. Entering a few letters and a wild card * is OK? Anyhow, I tried entering a name w/and w/o the wild card, typing the complete name.

                            Thanks,
