Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Same table query and enter?

    In the following script I'm trying to query records in the Ro_items table and then enter them again into the same Ro_Items table but with a different Ro_number. It seems that when I start the enter_begin() on the first record I loose the query. Only the first record is entered. Any ideas how to hold this query to fetch through the records and make all new entries in the same table?

    vrepair_number = "10005"
    query.filter="Ro_number = vrepair_number"
    tbl = table.open("Ro_items")
    q = tbl.query_create()
    tbl.fetch_first()

    while .not.t.fetch_eof()
    if tbl.fetch_eof() = .T. then
    goto EndOfLoop
    end if

    'Get old quote values
    vSupplier_Id=tbl.Supplier_Id
    vProduct_Id=tbl.Product_Id
    vMfg_Id=tbl.Mfg_Id

    'Add new RO items
    tbl.enter_begin()
    tbl.Ro_Number="vrepair_number"
    tbl.Supplier_Id=vSupplier_Id
    tbl.Product_Id=vProduct_Id
    tbl.Mfg_Id=vMfg_Id
    tbl.enter_end(.t.)

    tbl.fetch_next()
    end while
    EndOfLoop:
    q.drop()
    tbl.close()

    Jeff,
    I may be reading your script wrong, but I think the "if tbl.fetch_EOF()..." is redundant. Isn't that what the while loop is aready doing?

    Also, I don't see where you are changing the RO_number.

    One idea, which is a little more work, is to create a transaction table with the records and then append it to your table at the end rather than trying to add one record at a time.

      Jeff,

      Just a thought. Should not the query order be in a line after the tbl.open

        Pat,

        while .not.t.fetch_eof()
        if tbl.fetch_eof() = .T. then
        goto EndOfLoop
        end if

        This code is what breaks the while loop. Without it the loop runs through an additional time after it reaches the EOF and fetches into a new blank record.

          Mike, All query parameters are entered before the query is created. At the time the parameters are loaded the query dosn't need to know what table it will be using so it dosn't matter if the table is already open or if you open right before the q=tbl.query_create()
          The tbl. is what the query finally looks to for its information.

            Jeff, what is 't'?

            while .not.t.fetch_eof()

            Shouldn't it be:

            while .not. tbl.fetch_eof()

              RE: Same table query and enter?

              Jeff, if it really should be

              while .not. tbl.fetch_eof()
              if tbl.fetch_eof() = .T. then
              goto EndOfLoop
              end if

              the statement inside the if end_if pair will never execute, cause the while end_while loop will never be re-entered once eof() is true.

                Jeff,
                I agree with Tom. I think that the following should be enough to read thru the queried records and act on them:

                while .not. tbl.fetch_eof()
                'do your thing
                end while

                Given the correct tb1 reference, the extra end of file test is not necessary.

                  To all, the t. that should have been tbl. was a typo in the message. It got throught the second time because I copied and pasted it from the first message and wasn't paying attention. The syntax in my actual scritping is correct and the original question remains. I have since been able to accomplish my goal by using imbedded FOR TO NEXT statements. By creating a query for each record and then controling the number of fetch_next()'s, I did get the disired results. There must however, be an easier way to do this. Any other ideas?
                  Thanks,
                  Jeff

                      Jeff,

                      I just sent a comment on the eof(), but went back and looked at your script and one thing sticks out. I'd open two instances of the table. You are stepping thought the query with the tbl, then you use the same table pointer to enter a new record. A query is a static index, even though the new record fits the definition of the query, it was created after the query, so it will not be included in the query. What I'm thinking is happening is you are now 'outside' of the origional query. Try opening a second instance of the table, t2 = table.open("yourname"). Now use the second instance of the table to enter you records. That way you are staying within the query with tbl.

                      Good luck,
                      Jim

                          BINGO! That was was the answer. After looking at the script again I had t0 scratch my head an wonder what I was thinking! I'm amaze myself at all the different ways I can write scirpts to do the wrong things when a simple answer lies right in front of you. Too many hours at the screen yesterday. Thanks again, everything is ok again in xbasic heaven again. Now I wished I could get these darn memo fields working correctly!
