Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Indexing Problem

Somehow I created double indices for my application.
What is the correct way of correcting the problem.
The index is singular in the database table but when printing a form choices are doubled for the indices.
    Ideas are welcomed

    RE: Indexing Problem

If your form is based on a set of tables, you may not have an index problem at all. This might be normal behavior for the composite records which make up a set.
In a set containing two tables, using a one to many link, the fields from the parent table will appear to 'repeat' or 'double' once for each child record that is linked... Is your form based on a set, or just one table?

      Tom
The original table had indices such as
      "planes"
      "boats"
      "trains"
When attempting to change an index at the print form level I would see duplication:
      "planes"
      "boats"
      "trains"
      "planes"
      "boats"
      "trains"
The printing of forms would not select changes in the index. No error messages appear, however

        RE: Indexing Problem

        Fred, I'm confused.

Is the form based on a table or a set of tables?

Can you walk me through the steps you are traversing when:

"attempting to change an index at the print form level"

For instance when I open the default form for a table, and push the print icon there are no options then presented to change any index.

To change the active index, using the default form for a table
Select Records off the top menu
Select Advanced off the drop down list
Select Select Index/Query off the second drop down list.

If you do this, do you still see doubled indices?

          RE: Indexing Problem

          Tom:
The form is based on a table not a set of tables
Running through your query "To Change the active index..."
The answer is yes, I still see doubled indices.
But if you go to tables/sets
          right click: choosing 'define indices'
I am presented with a single list of indices
I presume that the index file has been somehow corrupted. What would then be the best approach for repair?

            RE: Indexing Problem

Fred, if I had a corrupted index file, I'd:

            1) make a backup copy of the entire database and store it safely.
            2) open the index definitions one at a time and write them down
            3) delete or remove each index definition from the subject table, one at a time, rebuilding the remaining indices as I went
            4) when all indices were removed I'd save my work and close Alpha Five.
            5) then, using windows Explorer, I'd delete the CDX file for this table
            6) then I'd start Alpha Five again
            7) then I'd rebuild each index

Earlier messages in this thread made me think that perhaps you are building a series of filtered indices. Each one limited to a particular range of values. In many applications it's better not to use filtered indices at all. Instead, when a particular range of records is needed for a report or a form, run a query which can then be discarded when no longer of use.

In any case good luck with your project.

Took your advice and rebuilt the index.
Thanks for the tip on the filtered indices problem
