Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    unable to open memo field

If the memo field is missing or invalid (this is my own fault; threw it away), is there a way that I can still open a database and see the rest of the info, or is it gone forever? This is on A5v3 but it was suggested that I ask it on this forum. Thanks!

    Valarie:

the memo field data was contained in the missing fpt file.
see if you can find a backup copy. Otherwise it is lost.

RE: unable to open memo field

Thank you. I should have been clearer--I definitely don't have the .fpt files---but I don't WANT the memo field info anyway. What I want is to be able to get at the rest of the database, but when I try to open it (or try to modify structure so I can delete the missing memo field), I just get the message "unable to open memo field." Is there a way that I can bypass that to get to the names and addresses in that database?

        Valerie, how about this?

Create a new database in a separate folder.

In that folder create a new table with structure that's similar to your existing, including especially a memo field of the same name. Leave the table empty.

Then copy your existing table, and its supporting dictionary files, on top of the new but empty table files. Use Windows Explorer to copy the files.

The goal is to create both a table and its related memo file in a different directory, then copy your existing data on top of it. Hopefully you'll wind up with a table that can be accessed, and each record will have an empty memo field.

To avoid making a bad situation worse do not do this work in the same folder where your actual table lives...

Another approach would be to open your .dbf file in another product, such as Excel, Lotus 123, or Corel Quatro Pro. Most spreadsheets don't deal well with memo fields and simply ignore them, anyway. I did a short test with Quatro Pro and it imported a .dbf file fine after the associated memo file had been trashed.

The only issues you may have to deal with is the number of records exceeding the capabilities of the spreadsheet.

If you successfully open with the spreadsheet, save under a new name in .dbf format and you should have data usable in Alpha 5.

Yes, thank you, that last one worked! (I didn't have a chance to try the second-to-last.) Thank you!
