Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Lookup pop-up

I have a tabbed form, where one field is filled by a lookup table. There are a fixed number of records in the parent table, no more will be added - but data will be changed on a regular basis. Ive found that when changing a record, the lookup pop-up wont come up by just clicking the arrow, I first have to change the existing data in the field, then the pop-up will come up by clicking on the arrow. When it does come up, it works fine, so Im sure the linking fields etc. are fine. Referential integrity is set to none. This problem is fairly consistent, though on occasion it will pop-up without the field being edited first. The times when it does work, absolutely nothing is done differently in fact I can click once and it wont work, click again and it will. This isnt earth shaking, but Im curious if anyone else has run into this.

Im using version 4.5 build 266.

John, I wonder if this is a tab focus issue? The first click might be setting focus on the field, so click it again to open the lookup. In other cases the user may tab to the field, so it has focus, and the first click opens it. -- tom

      RE: Lookup pop-up

I've had those kinf of problems, too. If it is defined as a table lookup in field rules, and there is no linking field or the linking field is not the field that fills that field, it won't work very well, or at all.

In most cases I have gone from a table lookup in field rules to a ui_get_list_array (usually with a dialog form) on the form. I have much more coding control for various conditions and the dialog is more attractive.

Version 5 will have much more sophisticated possibilities.

        RE: Lookup pop-up

Thanks guys, but its not a focus issue. When its not working (which is usually), I can click on it a dozen times and it still wont open.

And this is about the simplest type of lookup there could be the linking field is the same field that fills the parent field I dont know how it could be any simpler.

The only common denominator is that the field has to be changed first, then it always works. A mystery to me...

Can you post a working sample to illustrate the problem? Maybe we'll see something that will suggest a cause or a fix...

            RE: Lookup pop-up

The auto pop-up for a lookup only applies in enter mode. You could put the following in the field's OnArrive event:
sys_send_keys("{%DOWN}") which is the same as alt-down keystroke.
This is from a 03/06/1999 reply from Selwyn.

              Barry,

Thanks, though I wasnt actually trying to get it to auto pop-up as soon as the field was entered, I just wanted it to pop-up if the user clicked on the arrow to make a change. But actually your idea isnt a bad solution, so I may keep it that way.

              Tom,

I didnt mean to ignore your last post, I just had to put this one on the back burner while I work on some other problems.

              I appreciate everyones help.

                RE: Lookup pop-up

I am 100% with you Martin, I have an application that uses
                almost 12 lookups procedures.

Almost 8 of them suffering from the so call...error conditons and will required at least 3 retried to get it to work, again, not displaying the properly filtered data.
Then I have to get out of the A% completely and get back in.
And it will work for about 20 transactions, the same problem
will occur again. All my staffs put up with this nonsense for about a year.

Now I have done like you with..."DIALOG" and post right into the child.dbf..all working extremely well.
But I have not been able to get my ARRAY WINDOW to filter properly. HOW DO I UP-DATE THE INDEX ?
In another words, the ARRAY tend to show data with condition related to provious record. I use expression in my index=
                MODEL=VAR->MANUFACTURE

This to show all model available for the given MANUFACTURE name. But I always get models related to IBM instead of COMPAQ. While I confirm that my VARIVABLE is now=COMPAQ.
How can we wake up the idex and request it to "re-index"
                on demand ?
                Can you help.
                Thanks
