Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Line Item Numbering

    I am designing a report that requires every line be numbered. It is for an inventory list that can heve several thousand items. I have tried using a calculated field using count as a numeric variable and count = count +1, have tried to add it to detail section actions with xbasic scripting. I keep getting an error message count not found. I am using A5v4.03 build 230. Thank You in advance for any help

    i don't think you can do what you want in the OnRecord event
    of the report detail, much as it seems like it should
    be possible.
    i think you will have to add a new field to your table,
    "line_no", and then, before printing the report, fill the
    field in with sequential line numbers using the same
    query you use for the report.
    e.g. something like
    t=table.current()
    query.filter="invoice_date>{1/1/01}"
    query.order="invoice_number"
    query.options="M"
    t.query_create()
    t.fetch_first()
    count=0
    while .not. t.fetch_eof()
    count=count+1
    t.change_begin()
    t.line_no=count
    t.change_end()
    t.fetch_next()
    end while
    report.preview("inventory_report")
    even if there are a few thousand items, the line_no field
    should fill in fairly quickly.

      I believe you can use the running_count calc function. Just drag & drop a new calculated report on the detail section of the report and find the running_count function and apply a field to it. The genie should more or less walk you through this.

          Peter(& Peter),

          In fact, the running count, running total, etc should always be used unless you need the finished number earlier in the report. It is much more efficient than the non-running versions. I'm surprised it is not the default. I generally take a lot of time organizing reports to allow use of running values. The moment you use 1, it will slow down the process for the whole group level it applies to (because it has to make a preprocess pass through the data)

          Also the running value checkbox is so hard to notice compared to it's importance.

            Clarification:

            The moment you use a non-running value, it forces the pre-processed pass, which slows things up a lot!

              I'm trying something similar however in my report, the items are sorted and printed by a category field. I want to number the category lines when the category field changes. The category field is supressed from printing duplicates. Any ideas would be appreciated.

                Peter

                Where is the running_count cal function that can user for line item numbering in report?
                Is it the default function of Alpha or from where? I cannot find it in Help file.

                Thanks

                  I believe it's an option when defining a calc field in your report layout. Suggest you check the help file topic "Place a Running Count on a Report" The topic title seems pretty close to what you're looking for.
