Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Posting Questions

Would someone please answer a couple questions for me so that I can solve a posting problem?

    1. When using the Table Field Rules, Posting tab, a set [is / is not] needed in order to post data form one table to another. I found nothing in the manual about this so Im presuming a set is [not] needed. However, each table must have a common field which links to each other.

    2. Posting of a character field of one table to same character field of another field will work, rignt? I've found nothing that says otherwise.

I realize these basic questions but it seems there are strange thing going on and Im trying to isolate the problem.

    Thanks for answering basic questions,

    RE: Posting Questions

    1. The field names between the two tables can have different names, however there must be matching data in the fields. While setting up the post A5 will ask which fields to link.

    2. During a post you can REPLACE data in the field to be posted. You have three options during the post, REPLACE, ADD or SUBTRACT.

      RE: Posting Questions

      Ken,

      Good Morning.

      You Asked,

      1. When using the Table Field Rules, Posting tab, a set [is / is not] needed in order to post data form one table to another. I found nothing in the manual about this so Im presuming a set is [not] needed. However, each table must have a common field which links to each other.

Though not an expert, I think of posting when I want to update a field, like in invoicing or stock control, to add to an amount due, or reduce inventory. So the field you are posting to, either addes the number you are posting or subtracts it. With character post I suppose you most often would replace text, though you could +"add to it".

If you just want to place the value of a field in one table into another table, and you have a linking field, I still suggest using a lookup function.

But there are lots of ways of getting things done so I'm sure other suggestions will follow.

PS Have you heard about the Mn Alpha Users Group (MAUG)?

        RE: Posting Questions

        Tom,

NO! When will the next meeting be???

Here's the post deal. I've been through the field rule post and post operation and can only get the post operation to work sporadically. The post field rule has never worked.

Field rule attempt: 3 tables; Tbl-1, Tbl-2 & Tbl-3. I need to post two character fields from Tbl-1 to Tbl-2 and another 2 character fields from Tbl-1 to Tbl-3. The field rules should be defined in Tbl-1 to post to Tbl-2 & Tbl-3. The posting fields in Tbl-1 match identicaly the fields in Tbl-2 & Tbl-3.

Here's how I filled in Tbl-1's Posting field rule.

Table: Tbl-2 (The table which contains the fields to receive the post.)

Field: Fld-1 (The field to receive the post, identical format to source field)

Target Linking Key: Linking field (same as in a set)

Source Linking Key: Linking field (same as in a set)

        Operation: Replace

This was done for each field in Tbl-1 where the data needs to be posted to Tbl-2 & Tbl-3.

Result: When I enter data into the fields, none of the data is posted. Either I'm missing something very elementary or there's a grinch.

        Thanks,

        kenn

          RE: Posting Questions

Ken, you're not trying to add a new record via the post are you? I think the destination table has to have a record already... before values in the target field can be 'replaced'. If the destination table doesn't have a matching record I don't think the post field rule will supply a new one for you. That would be an append, not a post. I apologize if this is already obvious...

            RE: Posting Questions

Yeah, I came to that conclusion. My latest attempt is to make the two fields in the dateshours tbl as calc fields with a lookupc function to the fields in each of the other two tables. That way, I can keep my data entry form and the child and provider names will xfer over to the table with the dups query. The expressions evaluate OK but no data Xfers. I'm creating a 3 test tables to see if it works outside my existing database.

            Thanks,
