Concatenating Memo Fields

I am redesigning a table and wish to concatenate the data in 2 memo fields of an old table into 1 memo field of a new table. This would be a one time operation to move to the new table structure.

I have search the message board but can't find any reference to me problem. Does anyone know how to do this?

I think you would copy your memo fields to variables, concatenate the variables, then write back to whichever field you want.

It sounds like you'd be a good candidate for my memo repair scripts. You can easily modify the code to do what you need.

...As long as the memos fields are not too long. A variable will hold several "paragraphs" (or maybe a couple of pages) of data. Otherwsie, use the memo_write_to_file & memo_read_from_file xbasic commands.

I found a limit of a little more than 500 characters string storage in a variable. This is not a memo load...

Probably the easiest way to do it is first to concatenate
the 2 memo fields to a new, third memo in the same table,
and then later append that field with whatever other fields
you want to keep to the new table.
So, for example, if your current 2 memo fields are named
"mem1" and "mem2", you restructure the table to include
a 3rd memo field, "mem3".
Then this script should fill mem3 with the contents of
mem1 and mem2:

t=table.open("rhett.dbf") ' enter your table's name here
t.fetch_first()
while .not. t.fetch_eof()
bigvar=t.mem1+chr(13)+chr(10)+t.mem2 'adds a cr-lf between the 2 memos
t.change_begin()
t.mem3=bigvar
t.change_end(.t.)
t.fetch_next()
end while
t.close()
