Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    ODBC

Since there is no information available as to just what is ODBC, I need help. The only problem I have is that when I try to install an application I created onto another computer, I get the message that the odbc dll files are not on that computer. Why? Is this something that Windows installs automatically during its setup or is this something that my application should install. My applications installl on some computers but not all. Apparently, some computers don't have ODBC installed on them. Is this a Windows problem or Alpha problem? Regardless, my app won't install if it isn't there. I don't think I should have to look to see if other computers have files that my app doesn't install.

    RE: ODBC

    Hello Robert,

Here is a little something for you about ODBC:
    http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/VBrant/

ODBC stands for Open Data Base Connectivity and it is used to link your software to an external database where you can manipulate the data.

To answer your question, yes ODBC has to be loaded on the machine that your software is going to be used on and no ODBC is not an included standard-windows driver.

That is my take on ODBC. Hope this helps.

      RE: ODBC

      Hi There,

The Alpha help file have a great explanation of ODBC. You can create a link and use the link with certain restrictions, but then you can copy the link and you then have a .dbf file.

        RE: ODBC

It sounds like Robert is not using ODBC in his application. Is it necessary to have ODBC loaded when installing A5 even if your A5 app does not use ODBC??

(All my computers have ODBC loaded so I can't test this.)

          RE: ODBC

Robert, how are you doing the install?

I don't think ODBC need be present and installed on the target machine in order to:

          1) install alpha Five or the A5 Runtime Engine; and

          2) copy your database to the target machine.

On the other hand, if your Alpha Five database uses other non-Alpha tables or databases via the ODBC link provided by Alpha Five, then yes, each target machine must have the necessary ODBC files present and installed.

The installmaker routines recommended by Alpha Software include the ODBC files by default I believe. However, the installer does not then go forward and complete the installation of ODBC support once the files have been transferred to the target computer. You will need to do that yourself.

            RE: ODBC

Thanks for all the info on ODBC. I found that Windows does install it by default, but some versions (maybe pirated) don't. I went to Microsoft and downloaded the MDAC files needed. Now, if I run across a computer that doesn't have ODBC, I just include the ODBC installer and bingo.
