Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help with emails from A5v4

    Hi all!

    I have been trying to configure the code below to actually open a new addressed email to clients from my client database.

    I found this code on the Learning Alpha Five site and everything seems to go ok except for one thing. When I hit the enter key to send the email all that happens is that Outlook Express 5 (i run Win 2000) opens and just sists there.

    Does anyone know what the actual command for opening a new email and filling in the address is?

    Here is what I am using at present;

    if this.active()="email" then
    if a_user.key.value="{enter}" then
    if email.text="" then
    end
    end if
    if a_user.key.event="down" then
    a_user.key.handled=.t.
    command="H:Program FilesOutlook Expressmsimn.exe mailto:+email.text?Subject=Subscription"
    sys_shell(command)
    end if
    end if
    end if

    I have tried moving just about every connotation I can think of with no success, any help would really be appreciated.

    thanks in advance
    Greg

      RE: Help with emails from A5v4

      John,

      I've been searching for information on emails and came across your thread from some time ago. Trouble is, it's not complete, so I can't follow what is going on here.

      Your correct. The code sys_open("mailto:"+ "[email protected]") works, but as it is, it just brings up my Outlook screen, which is looking for input.

      I need a bit more. I'd like a standard email to be sent to a user once a job is marked as completed in A5. It needs to run in the background or silently. Can you help give any more direction on this?

      Thanks.

        RE: Help with emails from A5v4

        in version 5 there is a function:

        email_client()

        that brings up your email client (or the built in a5 v5 client) and fills in specified values in all of the email fields.

          Sorry and I appreciate the thought, but I'm not there yet. I can't use the beta version yet at my site, until it's fully released. Need to solve this in Ver 4.

            Charles.
            As Selwyn has noted, there are excellent functions to email in a5v5 that include the ability to have attachments. It's probably worth the wait.
            If you are in a desparate hurry, do a search on "zaleski email". There is an old thread where I discussed how to include text ect in the email. There is a byte size limit on what you can do and it's tricky and unreliable to try to have your email client automatically send it. Wait if you can.

              OK - Here's the answer! It's only good for Ver 4 as Selwyn notes, but it may help some people out there...

              The questions is, how to email from within A5. The code to do this is as follows:

              ###########################
              The following steps take items from the dbf and hold them as values to be used later. Use your own values here:
              ###########################
              vemail = email.value
              vformnum = formnum.value
              vsdate = dtoc(sdate.value)
              vstime = stime.value
              vacctnum = acctnum.value
              vquantity = quantity.value
              vordernum = ordernum.value
              vrequestor = alltrim(requestor.value)
              ################
              These next two variables string together the Subject of the email. Note the use of the dbf value created above in vsubj.
              ################
              tSubj=" - Print Order Completed. Order Number: "
              vsubj = vrequestor+tsubj+vordernum
              ################
              This is the body of the message.
              ################
              tBody="Your Print Order: "+vordernum+" requested on "+vsdate+" at "+vstime+" has been completed. Account Number: "+vacctnum+" Quantity: "+vquantity
              ################
              This is the actual mail string. It is made up of three parts. 1. The mailto section - must end in a ? mark 2. The subject section - must be separated from the next section with a & sign and 3. The body section.
              ################

              vinput = "mailto:"+vemail+" ?subject="+vsubj+"&body="+tbody

              ################
              Finally this opens the mail message and waits for the user to send it.
              ################
              sys_open(vInput)

              Good luck and hope this helps someone!
