Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Violated Table

I have begun to transfer a number of tables from A4 to A5. If course there are a number of violations. The problem is with the VIOLATED table. If I have a violation and I take a look at the violated table, the STRUCTURE of the table does NOT match the table I was trying to append. It seems to be stuck on my invoice table. Isn't the violated table suppose to change structure according to the table/info it found in violation? How do I correct this?

    Thanks

    RE: Violated Table

    Philip:

The violated table structure will mirror that of the master file in the append but will add a field that contains an error message describing the reason why the record was not appended to the master table. If you scroll across in the default browse of the violated table you should be able to see this information.

The most common reason for a record being dumped in the violated table is because it fails a validation rule in the master table. Assuming that you want all records to appended, which is almost always the case, then I'd advise that you remove all violated AND autoincrement rules prior to any append and re-apply them afterward.

I posted a set of utilities at www.learn alpha.com which might be helpful. They incude a generic append script which will alert you to discrepancies in the field structures between the master and transaction tables. This can be a huge problem if you have data in a field in the transaction table that is not present in the master. Ferreting out such discrepancies in tables with many fields can be a time-consuming process which the utilities make very easy. Certainly the script speeds up the append process when you have to append a while bunch of tables.

      RE: Violated Table

"The violated table structure will mirror that of the master file" This is the problem, the violation is NOT mirroring the structure of the master file. The structure in the violation table seems to be STUCK with the structure for my invoice table. Therefore if I append a table with credit memos in A4 to a Credit memo table in A5 and there is an error, the violated record data is input to the violated table into fields for the invoice structure, not the credit memo structure. The credit memo structure is non-existant.

        RE: Violated Table

I'm not sure I understand what is happening but if you are appending from an A4 table with memo fields to an A5 table with memo fields, I would first make sure the memo formats are the same i.e. that the A4 .dpt memo file has been converted to an .fpt memo file. I don't know if that's what is causing the problem but I'd start there.

Could the problem be that the data tables have not been added to the dbf and then repacked. Does A4 have different index rules.
