Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Ghost query is haunting me

    Hi,
I've spent the last 6 hours searching for reasons why a field rule post doesn't post, anymore. Neither can I find anything different between when it worked and now.

This happens to happen in the same set that I've had various other odd problems with. I've checked all links (which are numeric fields, and in which I added str in front of to see if that would help. It didn't.).

I believe the problem is that there is a ghost filter in a child table (which happens to be the only one-to-many links)that is always on when I initially open the form to do data entry or searches. I always have to "show all" in that table before I can do any data entry or searching.

When in field rules, quite often the query information on the bottom tool bar contains a "1".

Anyone know how to get rid of a ghost query?

    Thanks!

I'm sending this reply, only to try to get this back in the limelight a bit...no responses from anyone, yet.
    Thanks!

From the default form or browse hit Ctrl-I (select index). This should list all indexes and any queries that are hanging around. If you pack the table the queries are cleared out...

I would revisit the posting rule and see that you have the logic figured correctly after any changes. Are you linking the set based on the posting field as this might make the field unavailable for posting, as it will be in active use.

        Thanks for the reply, Stephen.

Yes, I backed up, packed, double and tripple checked indexes, revisited the posting rules, and everything else I could think of.

However - what do you mean by "...Are you linking the set based on the posting field..." On the transaction or target field? If that's what you're asking, the answer is no.

One strange thing I've noticed, though, is that there is an incessant index that won't go away. It is an evaluation to "T", and its name is FIELDNAME;.T. Yes - there is a semi-colon. Why is this in my list of indexes - even after I've packed? I suspect this is the culprit.

        Thanks again for your ideas.

Possibly a script is creating it e.g. printing a report in lastname order. The button genie will build this one for you... and there it is, till you pak the table. Maybe you have a form that is opened with a query to put it in lastname order?

            Hi Stephen,
There are reports designed on this set that are indexed in alphabetical order, however, there are no forms set up to open in alphabetical order. The ghost query is based on an ID number (a numeric field). That field IS the sets linking field. Can you think of anything along this line? But why would it query one individual record which is neither the 1st nor the last ID number?

The query remained in spite of packing.

            Any more ideas?

            Thanks!
